View Full Version : A few questions regarding elligibility

Hi all. I had a few questions and was wondering about my elligibility to join the Navy.

First off, I graduated highschool about a year ago and I'm currently attending a technical college. I've always wanted to serve and am decided on the Navy.

My first question regards my health. I have been diagnosed with asthma, but when I was talking with a Marine recruiter while still in high school we were able to work out a waiver or something. (I later backed out before MEPs due to some family issues). My asthma isn't a big deal, I used to run cross country, sometimes 10+ miles a day, and it didn't bother me. The only time I have problems is around allergy season, but two puffs out of an inhaler and I'm good to go. Would I be able to have the inhaler with me at basic or when I am stationed/deployed somewhere?

My second question involves legal issues. I have a couple misdemeanors regarding possession of marijuana, however I was never technically convicted but instead recieved an SIS (suspended imposition of sentencing). Would this disqualify me from joining? I'm a completely different person from when these things occurred and would love to serve in the Navy as my stepbrother, father, and grandfather have.

Thanks for any help. I'd go straight to a recruiter but the closest office is about 30 miles away and between school and a full time job I'm really busy already.

Hey Ryan!

Others will jump in here with definitive answers but I am afraid that you will be denied. Asthma is a big no-no and your legal problems are also going to get in the way.

If I were you, I would CALL the recruiter office and explain what you want. (I am sure you can find time for a phone call?) Then, see what the recruiter says and check back here as well.

Good luck!

yeah do what MacGruff said. I would call the recruiter they will most likely come to you when time works best for you.

If the Marines pushed through a waiver for you ... then you may be eligible on that part ... the recruiter would have to run your police record to check eligibility on that part.

Call the nearest Navy recruiter, explain what you have told us and let them see what they can do. If you can make it in to their office it would be better (in your case) so that they could make a phone call if necessary ... all of their resources would be handy and might cut the time down.

If you did all of that physical exercise without any problems, then I really wonder why you were diagnosed with asthma. Allergies I can see ... asthma ?? Hmmmm .....

Either way, give the Navy folks a call ... the worst that can happen is they say no and then you will know for sure.

Cheers,
PISTOL
