View Full Version : DEP'er Waiting for Basic.
Hello,
I DEP'd in on March 24th and am planning on leaving for basic in mid-June. I picked Seabee Builder for my rating and was wondering if anyone had any kind of insight on my rating or how basic training is or what I can expect.
Thank you!

Hello Ray,
Welcome to the site and the navy.. Thank you for your choice to serve.
I can not help in the seabee department. But to get an idea about bootcamp here is a link to check out.
http://usmilitary.about.com/od/navyjoin/l/aanavybasic1.htm
Read through all of it and you will have a good idea about what to except.
Also I hope you have been working on the Dep book it will help you alot to know the stuff before you go in. And if your recruit center offers group PT take advantage of it.
Good luck read around on the site here there is alot of info for you to absorb.

Welcome Ray..Thank you for choosing to serve!!!! I don't know anything about the Seebee part of things. However I have had 2 sons go thru Navy b/c study the book that they gave you in DEP and really work on your physical training. Wishing you well. Let us know how you are doing....Kathy

I have also heard that the book "Honor, Courage, Committment" is a good introduction to what boot camp is like - although at six or seven years old, it is a bit dated.

It is a bit dated, but definatley a good read - it may be at your local library. Welcome by the way and thank you for serving.

Welcome to the Navy, Ray !! You picked a great job ... I have several buddies who were builders in the Seabees. Darn good guys to have as friends ... especially when you have some DIY projects going on at home .
The Bee's are a great bunch ... by far the most professional bunch of construction types I have ever seen. Plus, they get out there and defend what they build ... so I hope you like guns, ammo and demolition !!
One added benefit to the Seabees is that they cross-train. So, even though you are a builder, you will still get time on a dozer, doing electrical work or even surveying and mechanic work. Sure makes for a well-rounded career that will help you a lot later in life.
Keep in mind, they don't accept slackers in the Dirt Navy. Those kind of guys/gals get weeded out pretty quick. They live by the motto "We work hard and we play hard". Just put everything you have into your work on a daily basis and you will blend in fine.

Hello Ray!
I also have a few friends who are Seabees. They're trained of course to do their job as well as fight. Expect to go to Iraq. I'm not trying to be a downer, just letting you know how the real Navy is that the recruiters don't really tell you about. If you have any questions, just ask!

Hi, sorry I cant be of much help on the subject other than a few guys I went to meps with enlisted under seebees. They were all very nice guys, From what I understand its not an easy rate to get or maybe that was just at the time I DEP'd. Also I ship out June 11th so around the time you do. do you know your ship date? The main answer I have been getting to the same questions you asked is. One: Run allot, work-out allot. Two: read the imposable DEP book and remember allot of it.(this is hard for me)...
And most important listen to FutureIT she seems to know what she is talking about.;)

To help you remember your "impossible DEP book", make flash cards - go back to the basics - they worked in elementary school - why not now. Give it a try, you'll be suprised at how well they work and you can take them anywhere - while you are waiting in line, bring em out and take another look at them. Have mom or dad help you. You both will be fine.

Great advice ... and don't hesitate to hook up with the other deppers in your area ... they need to learn it too and you can get a headstart on becoming shipmates. You never know when you may run into those people again.

My son will be leaving for GL on June 9th, just 16 days from now. He has been in DEP since late January. You need to study the book, learn the alphabet, insignia, order of command, etc. Try to find a copy of the series "Carrier" on PBS. Too late to order the DVD now. And work out! 50 sit-ups, 50 push-ups. I think each set in 2 minutes or under. And get your mile and a half run down, think it has to be under 13 minutes.
Take care....

Yep, make sure you know your rank and recognition, sailor's creed, make sure you know who the CNO is! CNO stands for Chief of Naval Operations, and I'll let y'all look him up. =] And make sure while you're there you study for your tests. Most times, if you 5.0 your test then you'll get a 30 minute phone call home, and trust me, you want that. Just make sure you know all of what your recruiter tells you. It'll make life A LOT easier. Your Petty Officers and Chiefs will ask you questions in the chow line, and if you get one wrong, you go to the end of the line. Which means you have less time than everyone else to eat. I remember in boot camp they were asking us questions in our compartment, and if you got it wrong, you had to do push ups or jumping jacks until they got around to everyone else. I know boot camp sounds like it sucks, but really it's what you make of it. I had a lot of fun...we did a lot of stuff we could have gotten in big trouble for
Hello,
It's me again. I was wondering if anyone know anything about the IS (Intelligence Specialist) rate? My asvab score is only 2 below what it is supposed to be for the rating and I was curious if there would be any kind of waiver I could get? The score is supposed to be VE+AR=107 but my VE is 51 and my AR is 54 which equals 105. The reason I am asking is because I am very good with computers and typing. I believe that this would probably be the better job for me. Just thought I would ask since it is too late for me to text my recruiter right now, hah.
I am going to basic July 8th. Yay. :)

you can always re-take the ASVAB to get a better score. if you're only 2 points off, i'd say there is a good chance you'll make it this time. as for the flashcards, thats what i used when i was in DEP and it helped me out a lot
