First off I want to say hi new to the forum I just turned 25 today, been married for close to 5 years. I have relized I want to accomplish couple things in life and one of those is joining the navy. I sat down and talked about joining the navy with the wifey and of course at first she did not like the idea but she has giving me he full support after some time lol. So I have a couple of questions and I hope some of you be able to give your imput
1. Can I join as a reservist
2. If as reservist will I be away for months and moths
3. How long is the navy bootcamp
4. Do I have to score a certain percentage on the asvab test to go into military police

Welcome and I'll try to answer a few of your questions.
Yes, you can join the reserves. There is a contract my son signed (not what he wanted but might work for you) called the National Call To Service. It is a reserve contract that has 15 months of active duty, usually stateside and then two years active reserves and the remained inactive reserves. It depends on your job if you will be deployed. CBs do get deployed. Boot Camp is about two months then A School and sometimes C School, again depending on your job. My son is a MA, Master At Arms, or military police and he can't remember the score you need. The recruiter could tell you. If you do want to be a MA the A School is about two months as well. You may be put on hold after boot camp to wait for a class to get sufficient people to start that class and there is no set time frame for that. My son classed up within a few days of arrive at the A School. Hopefully others will have more info for you.

Happy Birthday .... and welcome to the site.
Just out of curiosity .... you want to join the Navy, but it sounds like you aren't too hip on leaving home for deployments (months and months). What is it about the Navy that interests you ??
The Naval Reserves is definately one way to get to serve your country and pick up some good training .... but you need to understand beyond a shadow of a doubt that as a member of the US Armed Forces, you are ALWAYS on call and that your part-time gig can become a full-time gig at the drop of a hat and without your permission. You'd be surprised how many weekend warriors forgot that until this war.
Don't be afraid to ask questions ... to us AND your recruiter. Get the info before you commit to a trip to MEPs.
Cheers,

Welcome to the Cafe' and Happy Birthday.
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Eight Weeks
4. Yes
My daughter is an MA and her A school was just at two months long. I can't remember what her score was on her ASVAB, but I know you have to have a minimum for this rate, and most rates for that matter. She is loving life now however as she is at her first duty station in Atsugi Japan.
Hope this has helped a bit, ask more questions and I'm sure there will be others along to give you more information.

Does your recruiter hold DEPPER training ??? Usually that is where you will pick up some rudimentary marching practice and learn your ranks and recognition. Learn the proper way to salute .... make sure you know your left from your right (ask anyone who has been through bootcamp .... it's harder than it sounds ) and above all ... learn to let things roll off of your back. You are going to get screamed at ... and at times, feel pretty insignificant but it is all part of the training. Nothing personal, unless you do something really stupid ... just getting you to completely understand what you are being asked to do and motivating you to do it even though you may not want to.
Oh yeah ... and run, pushups, situps & swim.
Cheers,

I think the minimum is up in the 50's ish... Not to sound concieted or anything like that, but MA is not looking for a child prodigy or anything. A guy from my recruiting office went MA, and he only scored a 53, so I assume it is probably right around there. The cool thing about the Navy is that even if you dont get the rate you want right away, you can retake the ASVAB to get a higher score, and get into the rate you really want. One of the girls from my DEP is doing that. She got a 36 and she wanted to be a corpsman, so she is gonna study hardcore, and take it again. Good luck in getting what you want my friend.

Military.com has a specific section of their site devoted to the ASVAB. http://www.military.com/ASVAB There are practice tests as well as study tips.

There is a book that costs about 30 bucks in stores. It's called McGraw-Hill's ASVAB. It comes with a great CD with several full scale practice tests and it allows you to see your score, check wrong answers, and much more. I didn't really have time to use it before I went for the ASVAB, but I did take a full practice test and I think it helped me to at least know what was coming.
I did some searching and found it online for ya

Good luck!

Hi....
I don't see any mention of what part of the country you are located in. But am guessing that you and your family are happy in your current location since you are not looking to go active duty, only reserves.
If you are near a coastal area, there is the Coast Guard to consider. Have you compared the reserves of all the five branches? Have you considered joining your National Guard unit?
Be careful of "overstudying" for the ASVAB.... my son had a friend who retook it to hit the "enlistment level" for the Coast Guard and actually did worse (twice)! The second and third times, he was studying the book! And three strikes, you sit out for 6 months! He had a high enough score for a Navy enlistment the first time. (and they take your last score, not the best one)
Meanwhile, my son had to retake because the recruiter was a few days late getting his papers submitted and scores are only good for two years (I had him take it junior year of high school, where the students can sign up to take it in school.) My son scored higher, no studying. Everyone is different!
Once he was signed up, my son was given a book with all the information he needed to study and learn. They study at the monthly DEP meetings, plus do marching, saluting and PT elements. RUN!!!! You need to build up endurance for BC... also some upper body strength and swimming.
:sooohot:
Best of luck and let us know what route you take in your future!
