Hi all. I'm new here and have been browsing through all this information on the Navy. I am currently a Freshman in college majoring in Computer Science. I was looking into BDCP. As far as the jobs go I was thinking in the range of the Information Warfare. Does anybody have any experience with this? Would this work well for me or should I wait until I graduate college. I plan on going to talk to a recruiter next week over Spring Break.

Well first of all, Welcome and thank you for checking us and the Navy out. I don't have answers for you as far as the job type and if you should wait until after college to join. That part of the decison has to come from within you.

I'm sure someone will come along soon to answer any questions you may have. Enjoy our site, come back often, ask a lot of questions and again - welcome.

Thank you. I'm probably going to be contacting a recruiter for the first time tomorrow and just ask a few questions and see how it goes. If I'm not mistaken I need to contact
an officer recruiter correct and not an enlisted recruiter?

actually a recruiter is a recruiter...many stations are one man stations and only have Petty Officers working them, which are enlisted personel..Even many of the bigger stations are only run by Chiefs..
I take it you are looking at joining as an Officer? Then you would need to apply as such, go to Annapolis, apply for NROTC and go to a college that has that program, or enlist and apply for Officer Candidate School after your basic training and A thru C schools, depending on your rate. I know of one young man went in with his BA degree, started as an E3 in the nuclear program as a Machinist Mate, after boot, then A school, Power School and Prototype, he applied for Annapolis and is now there, as a pleeb. So he has now 4 more years of college, then he will get sent to fleet. So he will have spent 6 years in school before going to fleet. You must remember if you want an Officer..that has a minimum of 8 years ACTIVE duty AFTER schools are completed! They figure if they are going to invest that much money in you, you will serve long enough to be cost effective!

Well I was looking at going into OCS. So it's not actually 4 years of active plus 3 years reserve. It's actually 8 years active duty?

What are you looking at getting out of the Navy? Why I ask is because you are already questioning the amount of time you have to be active.

Is this something you want to do because ......please fill in the blank for me so I can better understand your thinking process which will allow me to fill you in with anything I may know about serving.

Hope you have a great day.

Its not that I'm looking at getting out. I'm just looking at what kind of timeframe it is. I'm basically trying to better myself in the Navy. I want to have that sense of pride and accomplishment that I am actually doing something that is helping our country. I want to make something of myself. I figured the Navy can help me accomplish this. I can see the world while still helping to protect what so many people take for granite. Currently I'm just looking at the options. I've been looking at both the Navy and the Coast Guard. I plan on setting up appointments next week over spring break just to talk to the recruiters.
