Hello again everyone,
Well, my son came back from the MEPS "experience" with a mixed bag of results and definitely mixed feelings. First, the story:
On monday afternoon, the recruiter took him from his High School to a local Air Force Base. They administered the ASVAB to him there and he called us with the results that night.
They were very good results! As a parent, I'm very proud of course, and will happily tell anyone what they are - if asked!!!!
He called with the results and based on what I saw on the about.com site, he basically qualifies for anything he wants. He stayed the night at the Air Force Base and in the morning was bused to the local MEPS with about 50 other kids who were going to go through physicals. Some of these kids were doing a pre-induction thing, and about 20 were in the same boat as my son.
As he describes it, they were all put in a big waiting room and were cycled through the various Physical stages: bloodwork, urine analysis, being poked, prodded and all the other good stuff. Of course, it was done in the military manner with all the Hurry up and Wait you could want!
Then came an interview with a doctor who asked questions about the form that he filled out before. Now, for those that do not remember the whole story, my son was diagnosed as ADHD many years ago. He went through all kinds of drugs to help out and none of them worked because the diagnosis was wrong. Anyway, he checked the boxes that spoke about medications and psychiatrist visits because that happened in his past and we do not want to fool anyone about it. The interviewer asked my son some questions and then he was sent to lunch.
After lunch he met with a Navy guy (he does not know who that was, but I believe it was the scheduler). The navy guy looked at the ASVAB scores and said that my son could have his pick of occupations. Then, he looked at the medical file and went s@#$%^%... He then told me son that a medical waiver will be needed and called the recruiter to take my son home.
But first, the recruiters had my son fill out all kinds of additional paperwork. They did tell him that he will hear an answer from the Navy in about a week.
Ok, on to the questions:
1. What is this medical waiver and what does it entail?
2. Does it really take about a week?
3. Any idea what to expect next? More medical tests? rejection? acceptance? what?
As usual, any help would be appreciated!
