I know at boot they can't have anything, what about a-school? Can they have cell phones, personal clothing, and stuff like that? Just wondering what they can and cannot have, any space restrictions?

Where is the A-school at. My brother is currently in San Antonio to become a MA and is graduating the 18th.

At A-school he is allowed to have a cell phone, my brother was telling me that they have a tv in their room. He wears civilian clothing, has his psp,Ipod, Digi camera.

Once arriving at A-school they will know what they can and cannot have. In boot camp they should have been told in general what they can have.

My brothers boot camp was at Great lakes, an hours drive from where I live.

According to what I have learned from another website (no personal experience yet)
that they let you have stuff in phases as your earn privelages, and this will vary per school.

I agree with KYMOM.............When my son was in A school........They had different phases with different privileges........Once he reached the 2nd phase (I believe it was) he was alllowed to wear civilian clothes and had us ship them to him. I do believe he did get a cellphone while in 1st phase (but not positive)........Anyway, the phases also allow them privileges as far as leaving base and when they have to be back, etc. I do believe that each A school is different, so might have to wait until he is actually there to find out all the particulars.

Have a great day,
Barb

they are allowed to have cell phones...my brother is in A School in GL right now, and my parents sent him his xbox 360, lap top, cell phone & digi camera. We sent some civi's, but you have to be in the 2nd phase to wear them.

Is it also true that while in A school you can send care packages as well? More than letters and cards, more like cookies and junk food?

Just make sure what you send won't melt. Chocolate doesn't travel well.
Or that all the tossing around won't turn it into crumbs.
Also the post office has flat rate boxes for sending stuff.

DH is in SanA training for MA right now. He has his cell phone and iPod (I had to mail them to him) and they have a TV and DVD's (they bought the TV from a graduate for like $75), but they are not allowed to have food in their room. I guess somebody in the last class left something out and caused an ant infestation. I'm planning on sending some cookies on Valentine's Day, though...he said they can have food in their lounge, so I'm going to send a ton so that he can share them with everybody else. Every class is different, though, depending on who screws up, so check before you send anything. Good luck to your future MA!

You can send them anything you want while they are in school.....I sent Brandon his laptop....xbox360 and a whole bunch of other stuff.....

Don't make the boxes toooo big cause they have to walk to the PO to get them....

Wow! My son lost a bunch of weight before he left for bootcamp -- when he left, most of his clothes no longer fit him. I don't even know what size he wears now! I guess I'll have to get a good look at him at his PIR and see what size his uniform is. I didn't know they wear allowed to were civilian clothes. I thought it was uniform at all times -- he'll be in Pensalcola for his A School -- if anyone has experience from there, please share.

Same thing happened here, only DH gained weight. He was doing so much swimming and running before he left that he had no body fat, and he gained 20 pounds in BC!

They're not allowed to wear "civies" until Phase 2, so you can probably wait and send him some clothes once he's there.

Corey had to get new clothes. Between the weight he lost before and the weight he lost after he needed new clothes. He was able to have his Ipod, phone, and most anything else he wanted.

I speak from experience, NO CAT"S>>>>
Long story, LMAO<<
One good idea for people sending gift packages..
If you pack baked goods, Place all cookies and likes in zip lock bags.
Place a trash bag inside the box to be sent and pop some pop-corn.
Use the Pop Corn as packaging peanuts. It works Great. And if the trash bag is air tight, the pop corn is good to eat when they get it..
The package my Grandma would send the popcorn was not too bad.
(this was 84'. Back before Microwave pop corn and such Home Comforts.) lol

So you can have a lap top then? Im going to be going to AECF A-school, and my recruiter wasn't real clear on that. Also my mom was wondering if she should bring my car when she comes for my PIR and then fly back. I told her I thought I wouldnt need it much. I know when I first get there Im not going to be going out on the town. Does that loosen up enough to warrant me having my Jeep around?

No, the Navy will fly you to A-school and I seriously doubt they will allow you to drive. Most sailors feel "funny" about driving right out of boot camp since it has been a while since they have drove a car.

You cant have anything till they give you permission.

I would tell mom to hold up on the car till you get to your school and find out when you can have it, depending upon how long you will be at school and where you will be going next if you want to go through the trouble of her driving it all the way from California to G.L. or whereever your school will be.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Thank you :)

You even need permission to wear your civilian cloths.
We had to run a "Request" Up the chain. Usually took about 2 weeks after "A" School started before you were allowed. Most everyone, except those on Remedial Classes or those with disiplin problems had there's at 2 weeks.
Of coarse, Get busted with a pet kittin in your room by a drug sweeping dog, and you can loose it too...

I think alot of it just depends on the "A" school. Zach stayed at great lakes for ATT school, and in order for them to get past phase 1, they had to get qualified in 3 watch standards and pass another PFA. Then it took about 3-4 days for the request to go up the chain of command. he was out of there before he got phase 3. We took him his civilian clothes, his cell phone and he bought a new iPod at GL while in school. They could have food in their rooms. They had a microwave and small fridge in their rooms.

He's now at "A" school in Lemoore, and he's back to phase 1. This time in order to get to phase two, he only has to wait 2 weeks and submit a request chit. Then he has to wait another period of time to get phase 3. The big difference between ATT in GL, and "A" School in Lemoore, is that in GL, at phase 3, you had overnight liberty, but while in "A" school, you have to submit a request to have overnight liberty. They can still have everything with them in their rooms...except alcohol. Zach has had his lap top since he first got out of BC
