In one of the other forums there was a question regarding having wisdom teeth being pulled. They stated that everyone get's there wisdom pulled. Is this correct?
Why, if there is no problem and if there is room for them to grow in.

Hi KYMom,
I read the same thing on the RTC forum and was wondering why -- my son is currently in boot camp and will graduate on 2/2/07 -- can't wait! Thank goodness he had his removed last summer -- recommended by the dentist. I'm just wondering if they do automatically now, so they won't have to deal with it later? A lot of people need to have their's removed usually in their late teens/early twenties. By the way, where are you located in Kentucky? We lived in Louisville for 7 years and just moved back to Houston. My son worked with his recruiter in downtown Louisville and shipped from there to RTC. Looking forward to chatting with you.

We are outside of Louisville in LaGrange (Oldham Co).
So what HS did Will go to in Lou?
Where at in Lou did you Live?
I was raised in Lou, moved to Oldham Co 12 years ago.
My son had his wisdom teeth pulled while in Boot Camp. He was having problems with one of his before he went but had no insurance so he waited. He unfortunately has had loads of problems with them since. First he developed dry socket while in Boot camp. He was put on antibiotics and after PIR was not able to leave to go to A school until he was released by the dentist there. He went on to California and had 2 more procedures on his jaw. One time he had more bone removed. He is back and in the reserves now and still has pain. I think his story is one of the odd ones though as I haven't heard any horror stories like his on the Navy-Parents site.

My son also had his out in boot camp. He tried to talk them out of doing it but, of course, that didn't work. He had no problems with them and since it was during processing week it didin't affect his training.

Hi KyMom,
We lived in Prospect for 7 years. My son attended Trinity High School. I sure do miss Kentucky --- things are so fast paced here in Houston --- LaGrange is a beautiful area. What part of Louisville did you grow up in and what about your son -- where is he at school? Talk to you soon.

We live real close to Prospect. My son that is the Depper works at the Prospect Kroger. Some of his best friends go to Trinity.
He goes to OCHS.
I was raised in the South end/ Shively area.

DH had his cut out at boot, and then they had to do something else later on because they screwed up the stitches...not a happy time for him. I'm guessing they do it at boot to prevent any problems later on that would interfere with them performing their duties...I'm sure it wouldn't be fun to start having tooth problems out in the middle of the ocean or desert!

Your right about that Mary, the ocean would be a bad place to get a toothache

do they remove your wisdom teeth if they're already in and caused no problems? I had plenty room for them to grow in and stuff...
I'm a bit of a wuss when it comes to people screwin around with my mouth

The time is getting close, you won't have to wait much longer.
Neoxaero,
I have heard of a few that have got to slide through without losing theirs.
I was sorta hoping they would pull Jake's during BC , but they didn't he did have some dental work done. (I think his teeth alone paid for our Dentist 2 trips to Europe )

i had mine removed when i was in boot camp. they don't make EVERYBODY do it, but if there is any chance that the teeth will cause a dental problem at any time in the future, they will be removed. i'd have to say the worst part about it is you are awake for the whole procedure. they just give you a lot of shots and you have to stay awake for it. what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right?

omg. I could have gone without knowin that.....lol. It doesn't hurt, right? That's all I'm worried about..cause one time I went to the dentist to get fillings, and they didn't wait long enough for the orajel stuff to start workin, so I felt the shot in my gum........ouuuuchhhhhhh.

you might feel some pokes from the needles, but it's not that bad as far as pain. it's more hearing what's going on during the whole process. the nice thing is, you'll get about three or four days to lay in your rack, and lots of good pain medicine.

Mine were impacted. They waited till I was at my permanent duty station. Then I had to have them removed before I went over sees. An oral surgeon removed mine while I was unconscience. Passed out woke up and didn't realize they were done. It took me three days to get over the anathesia, slept the whole time.

It's cheaper than his feed bill.
I figure he won't be able to eat for at leasst 3 days. That should save me at $60.00 .

Pengilum went to the Dentist today. The Dr. said they will have to come out, all 4 of them. He goes in on 3/7 and there going to take out all 4.
In an ironic tist of fate, his dad had to go to the dentist today also, and had his last one cut out today because he was having pain.

Pengilum got all 4 cut out today. He is on camp couch w/ pain pills and soup.
The dentist said they needed to come out due to no room to come in. Better to recoup at home before heading to Boot camp.

Hoping Pengilum has a speedy recovery with no complications ---I think it's a good thing to do it now, rather than have it done at bc. I remember when I had mine out (many years ago), I had dry sockets and was sick for over a week --- I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't had my Mom there to help take care of me! I would hate to think of a recruit in that much pain, so far away! Hoping he's not enjoying those pain pills too much! Ha!

My son has his out at BC although he tried to talk them out of it. He said is wasn't that bad as they gave him vicadan (sp) and it didn't interfere with his training as it was done during P week.
