Now here's the kicker. There are two levels of aircraft maintenance. I level and O level. If stationed at an AIMD that's where the AD will get into the nitty gritty of engine rebuilding/running test cells etc. O level is at a squadron and will do more troubleshooting removal and replacement of defective components and preventive maintenance.

Interesting about the I and the O levels. Wonder how it's decided which one you end up in?

Mostly needs of the Navy.
When I went through A school all the billets (jobs) were placed on a board. Then depending on class ranking (who did best to who did worst) the student was able to pick from there. Best going first. For a follow on tour you choose from what ever billets are available. It is possible to go from one level to the other and back as the carreer goes on. Most I level billets are considered shore duty so they will do the normal sea/shore rotation.
