Hello all. I just joined this board a week or so ago and told you all that my son was scheduled to leaving for boot camp Feb08. Well, that all changed today when he called his recruiter to check on an earlier date and he was told that he can leave Oct30. He rushed right up to the recruiters office and signed his contract and is very excited. (He is in Aviation, AE or AT....?) Me, well, I'm still trying to adjust! I am sad but excited at the same time because he was getting anxious knowing that he had such a long wait and this is what he wants so very much.

I do have a question that I haven't found a topic for, Since he will be in boot for both Thanksgiving and Christmas, will he be there longer than normal to account for the Holidays? What will they do for Christmas? I have read Honor, Courage and Committment and in there it says that they may go to a host home for Thanksgiving but that particular RTC didn't run into the Christmas holiday.

I enjoy reading about all of your loved ones and it makes me excited for Cameron's PIR. Even though we live very close to a military base we aren't a military oriented family so this is all really new to us and I appreciate all the advice that I get for you all!

Looks like you may have a Dec 22 PIR. That's cool. At least he will be out of Great Lakes before the Jan - March weather, unless he is staying their for school.
It is about a 5 1/2 hour drive from Louisville, Hopefully you will get the weekend with him and spend Christmas in the Hotel with him. We stayed in Waukegeen and liked it. Close to the base but near some restuarants and in the nicer end of town. Feel free to ask anything you need to know. One of us around here hopefully should have a answer for you.

How is the weather between January and March? I will be going From December to probably February. I imagine it is cold and breezy. How is it compared to Des Moines, Iowa? I lived there for quite a few years and did not mind it too bad.

Weather in January is very cold and snowy.....they stay inside for most stuff...Brandon was in A school there in January and they did not really march because of the ice....

Thanks for the information about the weather. That is good to hear that we will be inside for the most part. I was born and raised in Arizona and have lived here ever since except for about three years in Iowa. I am looking forward to it though. Only 63 days and counting.

Hi Connie,
Welcome to the forum. I just read your post regarding the holidays. My son arrived in Great Lakes in early December of last year -- his Chirstmas was like a Sunday -- you have the opportunity to go to church and you are off most of the morning. I was so hoping that my son would get to go off base to a hosting family, however it didn't happen, I don't know how that works. I remember I wanted to send him something, so I sent a nice card with another phone card in it along with a few snap shots of my son at Christmas when he was much younger. This year will be different, I just spoke with him 2 days ago and he will be home with us this Christmas. He is in Mayport, Florida. I too lived in Kentucky, I lived in Prospect, just outside of Louisville, my family was there for 7 years. We moved back to Houston last August. Missing Kentucky and the wonderful 4 seasons that you get!!!! Wishing you and your son the very best.

Connie,
Hi. My son is currently waiting for "A" school to class up in San Diego, California and he is in aviation also. He is an AE (aviation electrician's mate). After my son's PIR (graduation) he went straight to ATT (advanced technical training) at Great Lakes from July 27 - September 7. He is hoping to work on helos. My son's shipmate who is an AT is stationed in Virginia. They seem to be phasing out Pensacola for AE/AT schools. I don't know if Cameron will be coming home after PIR or not. I know that "A" school closes down for the Christmas holiday but I don't know about ATT since it is all self-paced learning on the computer and they go through Phases 1, 2, 3 of privileges. When my son arrived to "A" school he had to start phases all over again. I hope this helps a bit. As a parent we have to accept the fact that everything depends on the needs of the Navy. This is not an easy concept to accept. We must remember this is their job. Thank your son for me for serving in the greatest Navy in the world.
