TO CINDY Q. AND ANY OTHERS THAT MIGHT HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING A-SCHOOL FOOD. I HAD POSTED A MESSAGE ON THE NAVY.COM MESSAGE BOARD ALMOST A YEAR AGO STATING THAT YOU SHOULD IF YOU CAN BUY SNACKS AT THE .99 CENTS STORE AND WAL-MART ECT. WHAT SEEMS TO HAPPEN IS THE GALLEY CLOSES AT 7PM AND IF THE SAILORS ARE ANYTHING LIKE THE REST OF US THEY STILL WANT TO EAT AFTER THAT. SO WHAT THEY DO IS GO TO THE NEX, 7-11 ECT. AND IT ADDS UP. WHEN I STARTED RECEIVING NAVY FED CREDIT STATEMENTS AND THERE WERE MANY DEBITS FOR 7.99, 5.33, 6,25 AND SUCH. I ASKED MIKE WHAT ARE THESE CHARGES FOR AND HE SAID THAT IT WAS FOR FOOD LIKE CHIPS AND SODAS AND THINGS LIKE THAT BECAUSE HE WAS STILL HUNGRY LATE IN THE DAY/EVENING. SO I WENT TO THE STORE AND GOT HIM BOXES OF POP TARTS, A BIG THING OF PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY, POP CORN, ICED TEA MIX ALONG WITH KOOL-AID MIX (JUST ADD WATER), 7 BOXES OF CEREAL (THEY CAN BUY MILK), CANDY BARS, RED BULL ENERGY DRINKS, THE BIG BOX OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF CHIPS, CANNED FRUIT AND OAT MEAT PAKS. THREE BIG BOXES FULL AND HE SHARED WITH HIS BUDDIES ABOUT 10 OF THEM. HIS ROOM WAS THE HANG OUT ROOM FOR MOVIES AND FOOD. THEY ALL WERE ABLE TO SAVE THEIR MONEY AFTER RECEIVING THAT STUFF. IN PENSACOLA FOR EXAMPLE THE WAL-MART IS FAR AWAY AND THE MALL IS TOO. AFTER SEEING IT MYSELF I SEE WHY THEY ONLY HAVE THE NEX TO GO TO AND THE PRICES ARE HIGH. AT THE .99 CENTS STORE A CANDY BAR IS OF COURSE99 CENT BUT THE NEXT IT WAS 1.75. EXAMPLE ONLY.
SO GET THAT BOX OF GODDIES OUT TO HIM AND REMEMBER YOU ARE NOT ONLY HELPPING YOUR SON BUT THOSE OTHER SAILORS THAT MAY NOT HAVE ANY FAMILY CONNECTIONS.

OH AND THEY ALL HAVE MICORWAVES AND A FRIDGE IN THE ROOM. EACH BASE!

LASTLY YOU ASKED ABOUT THE TV ECT. WHAT HAPPENS MORE THEN NOT IS THAT THE SAILORS THAT WILL BE GRADUATING SELL THEIR STUFF TO THE NEWBY GUYS COMING IN. MIKES ROOM MATE HAD A 25 INCH TV AND SOLD IT TO MIKE FOR 75.00 MIKE TURNED AROUND AND DID THE SAME THING WHEN HE LEFT. THEY BUY ALOT OF CLOTHES AND END UP SELLING AND GIVING THEM AWAY TO THE NEXT GUY. WHEN THEY TRAVEL TO THEIR C-SCHOOL OR THE NEXT DUTY STATION THEY WANT TO TRAVEL LIGHT SO THEY LEAVE ALOT OF STUFF BEHIND AND OR SELL IT. SO DONT SEND A TV OR RADIOS ECT HE WILL LEARN THE SYSTEM AND BECOME A SMART SHOPPER.

WHEN YOUR SON GETS SETTLED IN MAKE SURE YOU GO AND VISIT STAY AT THE NAVY LODGE ON BASE THAT ONE IS REALLY NICE, BUT IT BOOKS UP FAST AND STAYS BOOKED. SO GO THERE AND WAIT UNTIL 6PM IF YOU DONT HAVE A ROOM ALREADY, THATS WHEN THE RESERVATIONS START TO CXL AND YOU ARE SURE TO GET A ROOM. THE BASE IS BEAUTIFUL AND THE BEACH IS REALLY NICE TOO.

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU AND OTHERS!

BLESSINGS TO YOU AND YOUR NEW SAILOR!

Yes!!! Galley closing early was (and still is) Karl's biggest gripe!! I did the same thing for him - mailed him care packages! He (and his roommate) loved it!! I've done it for him at Whidbey Island, too. Guys in the shop (where he receives his mail) always ask, "So what's mom sent today?" Karl didn't have a car in P'Cola so going anywhere was difficult. Care packages are a wonderful thing!! And yes, they ALL share!!! lol I love sending care packages.....makes my heart feel good, cuz it gives a little bit of home to Karl and his Sailor buddies who need that little extra "something" every once in a while.
And yes, someone is always selling something!! lol Supply and Demand is NOT an issue.

Karl's in Japan right now. He heads back to W.I. at the end of this month. It took him a little while to adjust to Washington.....he's a South Texas boy so the weather was a bit "different". LOL.
I went to visit him in June and I LOVED it! It's so pretty and I loved the temps!
I'm glad your God son likes it.

Hooray!!!! My son passed his final test in ATT at Great Lakes today and will have graduation on Friday ( tomorrow) at 1000 Chicago time (0800 California time). At that time he will be receiving his orders (at least this is what he was told). He is so happy he has completed ATT and going to "A" school after sitting in front of the "big blue monster" (the computer) for 8 hours a day since PIR. This has been difficult at times since it is self-paced and no interaction with others or labs/hands on. Most of the ARs in aviation electronics are being sent to San Diego or Washington state. We have our fingers crossed for the west coast since we live in California, but ... We know who is in control. It is certainly not us or the Navy. God has had his hand on our sailor's shoulder through his whole Navy experience. It has been a very positive one. He is looking forward to working in Aviation Electronics. I will keep you posted with further details. Any one else with a sailor in AE?

Congrats to your Sailor, navymom1!!!! Karl was sent to Washington (he's Aviation Computer Tech).....and from what he tells me, they're very short-handed. He signed me up to receive a newsletter from Whidbey Island and the August issue states the base is going through some re-organization and etc. Translation - more work.
Good luck to your Sailor!

Thanks for the ideas to send to A-School. I want to be one of those Mom's who sends loads of stuff for Ryan to Share. He arrived in San Antonio today. I can't wait to here from him and see him, he is 3 hours away. He asked if I could bring his "NaNa" to see him as soon as he gets liberty. Thank you again for all the ideas. Wonderful web-site. Congrats to all the Sailors and families. Be Proud!
