Just wondering if anyone has shipped their car from one duty station or home to another.
What company did you use?
Would you use them again?
What advice would you give someone before doing so?
And anything other input on that topic that you can think of.

I heard that the sailor gets the car to the 1st duty station then the Navy will pay for it to be shipped then on. I hope I'm right. That was a long drive from TX to CT. I found out it would cost $800.00 so we drove the truck to our sailor. Now I see it would have been cheaper to ship it but, we got to see our son. I forgot the name of the company that would ship.

If your sailor changes duty stations within the US they have to get their car there themselves. The Navy doesn't ship them. If they get stationed outside the states they will ship it to them. least that is what we have been told

Not asking about Navy paying. This is not a question related to my Sailor.
We may need to have a car shipped across several states and just need recommendations on companys. I just figured there would be lots of people on here that would have had personal experience on that issue.

We shipped our son's jeep from California to Florida. We used 1-2 Go 2 and it cost $800 or so. We were very pleased. We got several quotes and as they all are insured we went with the least expensive. Good luck

Sounds like we will have to make another road trip one day. I don't mind. Thank you for the info Bonnie I will have to remember that just in case I can't handle another road trip.

I believe that a fully trained Sailor could handle this task all by herself/himself.

This request was not for the sailor he can fend for himself and drive it himself.
This is something that I am having to arrange for someone else, and just fiqured some of you would be knowledgable on that subject.

I know my son can drive his truck by himself. I just said that in case he would be out on the sub. so long that we didn't want it to sit for that long. I was just keeping my letter short so I did not explan myself in detail. So sorry Tyler's Dad!!

Tyler's Dad,
It might be good to have all the info before jumping on someone. My son's duty station had no public transportation and being in an area affected by Katrina he opted to purchase his Uncle's jeep but this happened after he had already left California. We didn't want to drive it back so he paid to have it shipped. Since the jeep was here it was logical to set it up. Whatever has happened where he is at he has taken care of.

Is it better to wait to get a car until you get to your first duty station?

Yes it is... That way you don't have to worry about transporting it across country or storing it if you are being sent out on a ship.
If you don't have a car right now - just wait to get one.
My son sold his right after boot so he wouldn't have to drive it or transport it and then bought a old $1500 car to drive around at duty station... That way he only has to pay liabilty insurance on it and not a big deal if something happens while he is out to sea for 7 months or so.
It would suck having to pay full coverage on a newer car to sit in storage while you are gone...

Wait until you get settled in ... a lot of sailors tend to pass down a vehicle from sailor to sailor and you can sometimes do that. Not the best vehicle but gets you to the "library" and back .
Most bases have what they call the Lemon Lot ... which is just a sell it yourself lot. You can get pretty good deals there.
Cheers,
