Jennifer, my son is currently in Japan and he LOVES it!!!
He's stationed at Iwakuni. It's a Marine Base. First thing he tells me, "It's hot, it's humid and it's like home. I LOVE it!!" LOL. His duty station is Whidbey Island, WA and since he's from South Texas.......
I hope you like it there, too!

How are you liking Japan? My husband is going to Bootcamp in Feb, and we have been talking about wanting to go to Japan. I thought I had read somewhere that he will need to be at least E-3 before he can go overseas. I dont think that will be an issue, since he is going in with advanced rank, but I was just curious. I am assuming that this was straight out of A school for you?

he can go overseas, but he cannot bring a family with him until he makes E4. I like Japan a lot, but I hate being forward deployed...we always have to be ready to pull out of port at any moment. And we just got finished with an 8 month deployment...no fun! But I'm really happy to be back! Japan's the best...the people here are so polite and there's a lot to do and see.

8 months? wow!! That is a long time! That is definately something I am not looking forward to (as a wife and mom...) So I guess we are looking to stay state side then for the first round. :) Thanks for the info!

it just depends on what boat he gets on...do not pick a carrier! Do NOT! we are always out...even the carriers in the states...
Yeah, I didn't want to be on a carrier for my first orders. I put DDG on my dream sheet, just waiting to see how that goes.

but would he have a choice of not being on a carrier if he is Aviation Ordinance? I would think that he would automatically be assigned to a carrier?

ummm...well, AO's deal with ordnance on jets...or checking jets for take off...so yeah, it's a huge possibility for him...

Just spoke to a recruiter yesterday about AO. You are either put on a carrier, which is more navy side, or you are with a bunch of marines on a smaller boat, handling small arms.
Depends on what kind of AO he is. G1?G2?G3? If hes G2 (and if i remember right) he has a high chance of being on something other than a carrier.
Just for reference (correct me if im wrong)
G1 - flight deck, loading bombs onto the planes, arming them, and QA with pilots
G2 - Small arms, assembles, cleans, repairs, and tests all hand held weapons, from 9mm to a rocket launcher and such
G3 - Builds and breaks down all bombs/missiles/rockets to be loaded on or off planes by G1.
G4 - (kinda unclear on this) A group that does everything from G1-G3
