Hi everyone my name is James Imhoff. I'm currently in the DEP process and have my physical for next week. I'm excited because I've always talked about enlisting but now I actually am. I'm looking to become a master at arms, if anyone has any advice let me know. One other thing I'm looking at is the Riverine units, not SWCC, I really would love to join that unit but I can't find out anything about them can someone help?
-Thank You everyone

Welcome Aboard James. What other rates are you looking at? MA's are overmanned right now, so that *may* not be an option for you.

I was looking at intelligence, Seabee, and Hospital Corpsman too, or try out for swcc

Of those:

Corpsmen are manned at the appropriate levels, so advancement should be good.

SeaBees, way, way overmanned, advancement moves at a snails pace, if that.

IS, is undermanned for E4's, overmanned for E5's and manned at the appropriate levels for E6.

So, between those three you should try for HM's or IS's.

As a corpsman how do I get deployed with marines? I'm willing and want to help bring our boys home in one piece

After boot camp you'll head to San Antonio for Corpsman A School. You will receive orders to a specific command at graduation. After that, many (or entire classes) head to Field Medical Service School (FMSS) for a few months to learn how the Marine Corps is organized and what the HM's responsibilities are when attached to a USMC unit.

Depending on what your duty assignment is, you may be attached to a Marine unit right after FMSS or may go to the Fleet to serve as on the 'blue side' (meaning attached to a Navy unit) vs being a Corpsman on the 'green side' (USMC unit).

So you won't find out which 'side' you'll be on until well into Corpsman A School. And depending on how well you perform (grades, uniform, being squared away) in HM A School, you will have a list of duty assignments or billets that need to be filled offered to you to choose from. The number one student in your class will have first choice in duty stations at graduation. Some may choose to go from A school to a C school right away (like Radiology Tech, Pharmacy Tech, Lab Tech) depending on the needs of the Navy. And if you agree to go to a C school, you may be offered an increase in rank right away.

Bottom line, if you want to serve as a Marine Corps Doc they'll be plenty of opportunities to do so! I spent 14 of my 20 years in the Navy serving with Marines and loved every minute of it! There are so many different jobs that you can have as a Corpsman. I ended up getting my RN degree and retiring as a Nurse Corps Officer at USMC Recruit Training Command, Parris Island, SC.

My high school senior is looking forward to enlisting as a Hospital Corpsman with the hopes of eventually becoming a rescue diver. He'll do it, too!

Hope this helps a bit. Good luck and keep on researching online and speaking with folks who have been thru it before.

Go Navy!

How's it goin? My name is Jason. Not sure if this site is for already active duty personnel or for the new guys and gals, but I joined up either way. I've been in for over 10 years now. I've been stationed in Norfolk, VA, Mayport, FL, Panama City, FL, and now Guam. I'm not much of an admin person when it comes to the navy, but I can definitely help out with any questions anyone has on duty stations, ships, qualifications, etc. I'm here to help. - 717GM
