So yesterday I went to this muscle class at the gym with my mom (she is really into working out, she wants to get certified to be a gym instructor... anyway I digress) because she got really excited about me going with her. I also wanted to see if I could run a 15 minute mile or less.

The good news, I ran a 9 minute mile.

The not so good news, the muscle class kicked my ass, and now I am so sore I kinda limp around clumsily and avoid sitting for fear I won't be able to get back up. I went to the beach today to skate a few miles up and down the wall to loosen up, and that worked fine until I got home and stiffened back up.

I am not sure if I should be reassured by the 9 min mile or scared because I am rendered limpy because of one measly muscle toning class.

Keep doing it. It will loosen you up! When do you ship off to Boot Camp?

What beach? Just curious?

Definitely stick to it. Great advice. I used to run a 13 minute mile(I was fatter) and now I got it down to about an 8 minute mile and I do two miles at a time. Or 6 miles at a slower pace like 10min/mile like Ill be doin in a couple of hours when my coffee wears off a bit. Muscle toning should hurt, in my opinion. The pain is just the weakness leaving your body lol.

I can testify to everything that has been said. I entered DEP about a month ago, and I have one month to go. I could run a 12 minutes mile, and everytime i worked out I was sore as crap! It doesnt take long to work that out of your body. Just keep at it!

:D so I am still in the process of paperwork and getting ready for MEPs. I am supposed to meet my recruiter again wednesday. I have some old battle scars (from skating) that I might need waivers for, idk yet. I have been kind of twiddling my thumbs all weekend reading up and watching youtube videos. Back in February, I came very close to enlisting but I decided it was a big decision and I wanted to think about it more, just so I could say I was 110% positive it was what I wanted. But now waiting is even harder because I could have a date for basic and everything by now if I had only been a bit more spontaneous.

I feel like this beginning part is composed of a LOT of waiting...

OH and Hampton Beach. I hail from granite state. :-P

Military service = hurry up and wait!!!

Wow, it's beach weather that far north right now?

lol kinda. well not really. My Cali blood disagrees with New England weather. But it was warm enough for a good skate, and the surf was pretty good, there were actually quite a few out in the line up. I don't have the a dry suit and my board bit the dust last summer. I got my eye on a new one (http://www.santacruzsurfboards.com/boards/detail.php?boardid=46704) though.

Part of the reason I have my fingers crossed for CTI is DLI is back home. It would be awesome to be back home even for a few months.

Well, you are a California surfer girl?! What took you to the Northeast?

My dads a professor at Emerson. We moved up here because of that. One way or another I will end up back there eventually. I am so sick of N.E. winters, lol. I miss not having seasons :P summer all the time please :)

Now, I like to have seasons, don't know that I would like the extremes that they have up in the northeast and in the upper midwest.

If you're dad is a professor, are you not considering college or is college not your thing. That's not a bad thing, I always thought I would have wanted to go to college when I was young, but am glad that I didn't because I really don't think I would have been 'mature' enough to finish it!

Oh, college is definitely my thing, lol. I was practically raised on college campuses. I went to the Gators stadium on a kindergarten field trip.
I am a college student right now. I'm a world language major (for lack of a linguistics major) I've got 2 (technically 3 but I didn't want to pay the extra tuition to get the extra grade) semesters of Latin under my belt, currently in my 2 semester of Arabic, and my 2nd of French.
Unfortunately college is expensive. The navy helps with that. I also get to do what I love to do, linguistics, much faster professionally through the navy. Plus I get to see the world. Most of all I get to serve my country, and I am very excited and honored to do that.

Yes, I know about the expense of college. My son is will be in his Junior year of college in August. In our case, we also have the cost of rent for an apartment beginning in August. Up to now, he has stayed at home, but in August he moves about 3 hours away to finish his BA.

Well, good for you. You sound like you have your head squarely on your shoulders, I'm really proud of you! I'm not sure to many kids would think like that, including my own. That's not an insult, toward my son, just the facts, which could also be the way that his mother and I raised him. Of course, we always told him he would be the first in the family that WOULD go to and finish college, which could have alterd his way of thinking considering he is a very articulate kid.

Thanks ^.^ Good luck to your son :) What's his major?
As for me, the economy can no longer support a family of 4 the way it used to on a single income, so to help my parents I am pretty self sufficient. I pay my own tuition bills, car payments, and phone bills and feed and clothe myself for the most part. I can't afford anything beyond community college without taking out a substantial amount in student loans, and I know better than to put myself thousands of dollars in debt without thinking long and hard about it first.

The other day I realized that Georgia State University is the equivalent of one honda civic a semester. I will be paying off my car for the next 5 years. It puts it in perspective when you translate a BA into 8 used cars or 4 brand new civics. And thats undergraduate. I would want to go to Berkley for my graduate degree. Thats like 3 Caymen Rs!

So I think of it as a strategic career move. Why spend the money I earn with my degree on paying off my degree, when I could be, say, buying fast cars?

His major is Web Design. He graduates with an AA next Friday night and then in August, he moves to Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN to finish his BA.

I agree, let the Navy pay for it, plus you get housing allowance paid as well. Good deal all around.

Not too sure about minutes per mile or any of that good shit. Not to say that what you do nowadays is bad, far from it. Just that it didn't matter a good goddamn how fast you could run a mile. Just as long as you WANTED to......

Bit of a philosophical difference, but the big news was, you never really knew how fast you had to do it. You just ran. Most failed.

Oh well, never mind. We can always try again.

Oh no you can not....
