Hi - if your sailor loves cars (any kind of cars), he will really enjoy Volo's car museum. Here is a link to their website:

I am not much of a car person and I really enjoyed it. They even had a car there on sale for over $2 million (that is not a typo!). They have cars from movies and a military museum (kind of creepy to see some of Sadam Hussein's and his son's personal items). We were there around Halloween time and part of it was set up like a haunted house. Our little one, Amy, who was 5 at the time even got to see Herbie the Love Bug and Sean got to touch Eleanor from Gone in 60 seconds (apparently a big deal!) There is also an antique mall (huge) and my son got a discount on his admission for being in uniform. (How proud was I to walk around with him in uniform and many people shaking his hand, thanking him for his service.) He was one of the only Sailors there that day!!
It's not too far from GL either. We found the brochure in the hotel lobby. BTW, don't stay at the Best Western in Waukeegan. Trust me - not enjoyable swimming in a pool that is supposed to be heated but wasn't even though the manager insisted it was!!! The only upside is that it wasn't far from RTC.
