Has anyone else experienced this?

Since about 2000, I have been trying to donate blood. I went as recently as about 2 weeks ago. Probably not going to try again. You know when you go through the initial process, you have to answer lot's of questions. One of the questions is 'have you eaten meat from what was formerly Yugoslavia, Turkey' (and other countries that I don't remember). I have answered yes, because the Caron made a port of call in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia (now Croatia) back in January or February 1988 and I did eat several sandwiches from local shops.

So, as a result, I am in effect banned forever from donating blood. They tell me to check back yearly as further studies cause them to reevaluate their decisions. I mean, hell, it's been 22 years. What are they waiting to happen? If something was going to develop, wouldn't it have happened by now?

That's goofy ... half the military has probably done that.

I've tried to donate in the past, although I have to admit it's been at least a year. Medical did not ask those questions in FL, so it must be a fairly new concern. In any case, what your doing is admirable, as not too many sailors either give back to the community and/or can stand the needle! Thanks for volunteering and please check back annually if that is what was recommended-you really are making a difference!

Not only can't the wife and I donate blood. Our oldest daughter tried last year for a high school blood drive and was denied. It all stems from our 2 years in Scotland and for some reason since the Mrs. was pregnant for a few months while we were over there our daughter was refused as well. Something to do with mad cow or some such nonsense.

Man, that is crazy. I mean, I understand that you need to protect the blood supply, it only makes common sense, however, if something hasn't developed after 20+ years, exactly what are they expecting to happen.

I agree....Brandon said that he could not give for a time period, cannot remember how long he said, because he was in Africa.....
