So this thread is about what makes you keep going, even when it seems like you've run out of gas. Even when I was in deep trouble, I showed up to work with a smile (after the 1st 30 mins of waking up :p) and did my work as it should be. I've never had any problem doing extra work if it meant something. Whether it improved something or impressed somebody, I've never had a lack of motivation in my life. Why is this? Did I get raised properly? Maybe how my father had me work for him all the time with his satisfaction being the reward. I find that I have no issues loading myself with work because I know it pays off. I mean I'm taking 3 college courses, balancing a watch section, working a second job, volunteering when possible, and can't wait for the job to finish so i can volunteer more. I don't know why I'm like this, but I am.
What drives you?
I just like the responsibility of work!
I take on additional duties all the time. I have taken on the task of backing up our Attorney in some of the processes that he deals with. I enjoy reading law and interpreting what it actually means. The attorney looks at what I have done and corrects me when I am wrong or uses what I have done when it is correct. The attorney is my age and he is very, very, very through in his work. Just went to court with him on Thursday morning/afternoon. Very interesting case of a dirtbag who uses the bankruptcy laws to keep from paying taxes. Our attorney convinced the judge to allow us to do what we needed to collect the taxes despite the bankruptcy proceedings.
Every once in a while, I feel that the batteries are drained. When that happens, I take a few days off. That happened a couple of weeks ago, I took off a Tue/Wed and Thur. Afterwards, I had recharged the batteries and here I go, taking no prisoners.

For me it is the satisfaction I get from knowing I did something productive and that whatever it was had helped the day move along efficiently.

I hate failure. It grinds me to the bone. I may not be a complete success at everything ... but I will NOT fail at ANYTHING !!

I simply enjoy doing what needs to be done, and doing it well. It seems like many sailors prefer to cut corners, and don't enjoy working for the satisfaction of a job well done! Go Navy!

Sailors are nothing more than a cross-section of America. We don't cut any more corners or shrug responsibility or obligations than anyone else.
The fact that it is comprised of 100% volunteer people ... speaks volumes.
