Hello, my name is Brittany and I am going to be a JR in college this year and my major is biology. I am interested in doing physical therapy for the Navy, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I orginially wanted to join after I graduated with my undergraduate degree in biology and then have them help my gain my graduate degree in physical therapy at college. Is that possible? Or do I need to go to graduate school and then apply? I was really hoping to get in sooner rather than later. Like I said I'll be a JR so I still have some time before I need to see a medical recruiter but I just need all the information to help convince my mom :-/ My godmother/cousin was Navy. She went in after her undergrad and then they helped pay for her medical school. I'm really interested in the Navy the more I read the more I see myself in it. If anyone has any information it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!! Also thanks to all those men and women who are serving our country now or have served. Thanks!! :)

I think the best way to find out is to contact an officer recruiter. They can best assist you. As far as the mom thing goes, anytime a child says anything about the military to their parents who may not have much of a militant background the first response is NOOOOO! i know my moms was and she couldn't be more proud of me now :)

Haha yea I completely understand the shoot me now please :) I've def felt that way a time or two.

Yea I'm going to look into contacting a recruiter this year so I can get as much information as possible. That is def how my mom is reacting. She won't even listen to anything I have to say when all I say is "I think I might be interested in the Navy." Its a flat out NO from her. Thats why I want all the information I can get. I'm hoping she'll cocme around eventually.

Thanks for the advice!! :)

Well, you also have to remember, that you are over 18. I know that you are probably dedicated to your parents, which is good, however, it IS your life and you have to live it the way that you want to live it. Hopefully, the decisions you have been making aren't bad one's in general, but trying to advance your life by becoming a Naval Officer is NOT a bad one. Just my two cents.

Good luck to you!

Yea I want my mom to be ok with it but at the end of the day I'm going to make the decision that is right for me. I've talked to my dad and he's taking it a lot better. He just says that its a great opportunity and he would be extremely proud of me if this is what I choose to do; so I'm very happy to have some support. I have talked to other family members, like my grandmother and she isn't so much as for or against but she's willing to listen to what I'm thinking about which I love. My mom on the other hand won't let me get two words out but I'm not giving up hope. This is something I want to do so like you said the choice is mine to make.

Thank you so much!

OK thanks.. here it goes.. from the research I've been doing I know that I would be able to go in as an officer after I graduate from college and therefore I would need to go to Officer training. My question is since I would be medical do I go to the 12 week program or (from what I read) there is a 5 week one?? I'm not completely sure. Thanks for any answers!

From my reading of this website, there is no exception for the 12 weeks of training, which would make since since you have no military experience and would need a working knowledge of how the Navy operates.

http://www.ocs.navy.mil/ocs_program_overview.asp

Officer Candidate School

Purpose:
OCS is one of five Officer training schools located at Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island. The 12 week OCS course is designed to give you a working knowledge of the Navy (afloat and ashore), to prepare you to assume the responsibilities of a Naval Officer, and to begin developing you to your fullest potential. OCS is extremely demanding; morally, mentally, and physically. Your personal Honor, Courage, and Commitment will be tested at OCS and you will be challenged to live up to the highest standards of these core values. The school’s curriculum will demand the most of your academic prowess. Mental training involves memorization of military knowledge, academic courses, and military inspections. Physical training (PT) begins immediately upon arrival at OCS. PT consists of running programs augmented by calisthenics, as well as aquatic programs. You must be committed to the goal of earning a commission as an Ensign in the Navy before arriving at Officer Candidate School.
