hey i hope a mass communications specialist reads this post and give me some great info. im about recieve my AS in digital video producation and would like to pursue a BS afterwards but its outrageously expensive. ive been looking into the military for MOs that offer some type of video media, production, editing etc so that i can further my education, and ive noticed that the navy has the MO mass communicatiosn specialist but when i talk to recruiters no one's ever famliar with it. i mean its to the point where im a little shakey to join now because i dont want to be running wire through fields for towers or something. basically my question is how are the jobs of a MC distributed or assigned to a person. for instance would i be able to choose "video production" or no the navy will put me where they need me to be in the field, which could possible be running thousands of feet of cable lol. any replies will be greatly appreciated i just want the truth. thanks in advance.

Aren't we all doing some mass communicating on this site? :)

Take a look at this: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/enlistedjob1/a/mc.htm

As far as specializing, if you look at the Navy Enlisted Classifications (NEC's), you could be doing any of those, depending upon what the needs of the Navy is at the time they are passing out orders. If they need a MC for a certain NEC, then you will be given orders to that particiular "C" school and then off to your command. If they don't have a need for a particular NEC but just a MC at a command, you could go straight to a command out of "A" school without "C" school training.

However, with all of that said, as a Seaman, you will get to experience all of the labor that is involved in being a MC regardless if it involves being on running wires, emptying trash, cleaning the office, whatever. As a Seaman, you are the labor work force.

I do not know if it is possible to enlist for a particular Rate and NEC? One of our resident recruiters will pop in shortly and hopefully can provide more information on that question.

oh yeah thats what i figured, i learned to read the fine print at an early age lol. i seen people my age coming in talking to recruiters and they were just believing everything came out the recruiters mouth but i was thinking i will try to find someone on a forum who has done it before to hear their take on it before i sign up because i dont want to be stuck for X amount of years running wire lol. the recruiter gave me the link to that site but it still leaves a lot of blanks open. i would like to know the entire process of how the duties of that MO are given out. if it goes by grades, performance, a portfolio you build, ummmmm anything i dont know. finding someone that recently served as an MCS is really seeming impossible. but hey thanks for the info.

yup, i'm an MC3 stationed on USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77). i love my job. everyone, and i do mean everyone, says they hate me for having such an awesome job. coming out of A school, you will not have a choice on getting an NEC or not. there are orders for Combat Camera where you will be deploying with SEALS and the like, but you have to go though a screening process to get those orders. i'm not able to get here often, so look me up on facebook and i'll be happy to answer any questions you have
