View Full Version : Looking to enlist but still unsure
Hi, my name is Dominic i am 17 and i know that i wanna join the military. The NAVY seems like a fit for me, but i am wondering how the pft is. I am a very athletic kid playing lacrosse and hockey and i live at the gym. I was wondering where i need to be to compete to be a seal. Also beside that fact, i am trying to find a carreer in the NAVY that i would enjoy. I am looking at Law enforcement and Securtity, SWCC, Navy Diver, or AIRR. If you guys could give me a little more information that would be great and i am trying to contact my recruiter but they have not answered yet.

In order to truly compete for SEALs, you need to be in EXTREME physical shape. I can't even explain the level of fitness you need to be at. You also need to be a strong swimmer, 80% legs and 20% arms is the best way to describe it.
Check out the book "lone survivor" by marcus luttrell, in the beginning he goes over a lot of the training he did to get through buds and become a SEAL.
as for the regular PFT, its honestly a joke. twice a year pushups, situps, 1.5 mile run or if your joints cant handle extended running (typically older people)/your an out of shape *BLANK* theres bicycle, swim, and elliptical.. that extra stuff is only offered at certain commands. if you go spec ops, prepare to be running your entire career
Well im a fitness freak. I play two sports that involve a ton of leg strength. and This is a normal day for me. Wake up 5:45 go to the gym till 6:45 then shower school till 1:30 then hockey practice from 2:30 till 4:15 then eat then gym from 6:00 till 7:30 then homework and bed. I think its gotta be alot mentally as well i wish someone from the seals could talk me through what thier trianing is like

I remember pistol aka retired navy chief said something about when he was a recruiter they had an ex seal retired that they could call when people were serious about signing up with a Spec Ops contract.. talk to your recruiters, they might have some sort of hook up.
Yesterday, i talked to my recruiter and i'm getting on the ball to join, and i have to go back with my mother which is going to be a huge h***le because she has been a total b**** when it comes to this do u guys have any advise in how i can get her in there. My dad has no problem but she always does?

Yep .... get your facts in line and have a plan on what you want for your future BEFORE you go talk to her. As a parent myself, I can tell when my kids really have a desire for something and can see some real benefit to what they want as opposed to just a p***ing fad that all their buddies are doing.
Try to anticipate the concerns that she is going to have with it and be able to show her what the Navy will offer to you that will help ease those concerns.
Ask your mom AND your dad to meet with the recruiter IN YOUR HOME (in their happy place !!) and she can get the info she worries about addressed first-hand.
THEN .... have her get on this site and she can talk to some of the other moms who more than likely had the same concerns at one point.
Oh yeah .... and don't forget to give her a hug and tell her that you love her !!
Dominic, I don't believe your mom is being a B**** (self sensored) about anything .... I think she's being a good mom who is concerned about her son and his future. Consider yourself a very lucky young man, many people don't have someone like that in their corner.
Cheers,
PISTOL
