My son just enlisted and is going to go to the nuke school after Great Lakes and I was wondering if there was anyone out there who has been through the program or knows anything about it. From what I can tell it's a great program but a tough one. Any information or advice that I could give to him would be great. He doesn't leave until September so he's got some to get ready.

Hi. I don't know about the schooling itself. However, my husband was going to go nuclear until they recl***ified him a few weeks ago. But we were to live in Goose Creek, SC. The school is over there and it was to be a year and half to two I believe. Long LONG hours of study and cl***. Extremely hard. I know it isn't a lot, but that is what I know of it as much as we were TOLD.

If I were wyou, I would go by the recruiting station and just ask. Ask to speak with the LPO (leading petty officer) or the LCPO (leading chief petty officer). Basically the person in charge of the station. I wouldn't beat around with anyone else unless you have to do so!

First "welcome" second thank your son for enlisting in the Navy. As far a nuke school goes, I can give your son some advise, my son is a MM nuke, and is a petty officer 2nd cl*** now serving on the USS Nimitz, currently deployed.
Yes that school is long and VERY HARD! Not for the faint hearted, and the hours will be long with ***igned study time and if the sailor wants to get ahead, plenty of volunteer study time. No point in taking extra courses before going, the navy will want to teach him THEIR WAY..THE NAVY WAY..so as long as he quilified for nuke school, he should haveno problem finishing as long as he has a good head about him and can deal with long study hours. If you have numerous questions to ask me, feel free to e-mail me .

Right now my son has decided to go for the Seaman to Admiral program, already accepted at Iowa State in pre-med, so now the paperwork ffrom the navy to get him there. Seems my son has finally decided he really wants to be a navy doctor now..his ORIGINAL GOAL!

I went through Nuke school many years ago, but I cant imagine it has changed all that much. It was very challenging for me, more so than HS or the 3 years into my mechanical engineering studies were. It was not so much the information you learn as it is the pace in which it is taught. My advice for your son would be to study his tail off. I failed a test early and was on mandatory 45 study hours/week for the first half of power school, on top of the 40 or so classroom hours. If he doesnt understand something, ask for help. ALL of my instructors were very open to helping you understand. When he gets ready for his oral boards (I'm assuming they still do these), just be confident in your answers. They dont like to hear Petty Officers giving answers that sound like questions.
