Congrats Jennifer and Brian!!!!!!,,,,,,,,,,,Now for the hard part,,,what are you going to do with your raise? HaHa!

Haven't heard from Evan if he made MM2 yet. However he is out in San Diego moving into new digs as I type this. They had to make the move from Norfolk to San Diego due to new home port for his ship. The quota for MM2 is like 6%, so I am not holding my breath on advancement for him. Neither is he, but we can hope.....

Evan'sDad brings up a good question ....... what will you do with an extra $175 -$215 per month ??

Follow the logic ...

If you can live on E-4 pay in October (before advancement).... you should be able to live on E-4 pay in January (after advancement) too, right ??

So ... why not tailor your lifestyle to the paygrade that you just advanced from and take the additional money you get for your new paygrade ($175 -$215 per month) and use it to make MORE money ?? Invest, buy stock, put it away in a 401K, bury it in a mayonaise jar in the back yard ... Something, ANYTHING is better than wasting it on another supersized meal at McDonalds or a night in a bar overseas !!

Guys, we are talking anywhere from $2100 to $2600 extra per year .... maybe even more if you get a time in rate raise ... just for a single paygrade advance !!

I always advise to spend at a paygrade LESS than what you are and save the rest. Made E-5 ?? then spend like an E-4 !!

A lot of Chiefs (E-7's) still spend like an E-4 or E-5 ... don't believe me ?? Look at the cars that many of them drive. Living modestly = MO MONEY !!

The Family Service Center on every base offers excellent financial planning classes that specifically address this kind of thought process. I HIGHLY recommend that each of you future and current Sailors look into it as soon as possible. Especially those who are getting sign on bonuses .... that is a LOT of money to waste :bigemo54:.

Hey Pistol, That was a wonderful post you just made. I know that when my son advances a pay grade I will encourage him to make bigger contributions to his savings plan,,,,,I think it is called tsp????? However I have seen the advancement notice on Navy Times and his name is not on the list. The Navy must have too many machinist mates on the books! He has plenty of time in rate, and always scores high on the tests. Well maybe next cycle!

Good post Pistol.
I know my son is investing already and is planning on investing the raise also, along with paying extra on his new truck he bought in July.

Thanks everyone, and congrats to all the frockees!!!

My TSP will see a raise, and I've got to be saving my pennies so I can get stationed in Pensacola and be close to home!!! I'm ready to be back state-side (I think...). I will definitely have to adjust back to it, but I'm ready to see my family more!! I put in for orders next month!

CousinIT, MacSteve or one of you other active sailors ... can you please explain the TSP for us ??? (Preferrably in a thread of it's own ...).

I am definitely not as schooled up as I could be to explain it properly to the deppers !!
