You came to the right place. The answers I got here when I was starting the enlistment process were real helpful. And there's a wealth of experience from Retired Chief (Hooyah pistol!), Out in the fleet (Hooyah MacSteve, CousinIT, etc) Navy moms (Hooyah KYMom)to me, one month into "A" school (Hooyah.... me). Let me tell you, I think the Navy is great.
Did you have any specific questions
P.S. we hooyah a lot here at IS A school.

Construction???? So you want to be a SeaBee?
Time off varies depending upon where you are stationed, and what most sailors do on their time off varies depending upon their personalities and the people they hang with.
Some spend their spare time on here helping people like you, this keeps them doing something positive and constructive.
The more questions you ask the more everyone can help direct you.
Good Luck
... i dont mind being on a boat for a time period but is it really boring? what do you do on your off times and how much time to you work/play usually?
I was on board USS Caron (DD-970) for my entire time in the Navy. We had a crew of 250 enlisted and approximately 30 officers.
Boring? At times. Other times, you are very busy. It also depends upon your job. I was an office jockey as a DK. I pretty much had bankers hours (pun intended).
My day when underway went something like this:
0600 Revilee
0700 Breakfast
0730 Quarters
0800 Office
1130 Lunch/Nooner
1300 Office
1630 Dinner/Knock Off
1800 If work had piled up and not gotten done, I would go back to the office and finish it, otherwise, I was done for the day.
Depending upon your job, you may work on a watch schedule. Meaning you work a 4/8 or even 12 hour shift on your job.
When we were underway, usually Sunday's were down days. If you had a watch to stand, of course, those still had to be done, but otherwise, you were free to do whatever you wanted.
At sea I had a lot of time to read, write letters, etc. A lot of the guys played cards, watched TV or whatever.
Of course, mixed in with all of this were the GQ drills, fire drills, man overboard drills.
All in all, you had boring days but then you had some exciting days, some days you had frustrating days.
