My recruiter called and told me my medical waiver request was approved!! Woohoo!!!
Now, I just have to decide what it is I want to do. My recruiter is pushing me toward Nuke because of my ASVAB score, but I'm not sure that's the road I want to take.
I'm so excited!!!! Now I can finally enter DEP and start the process for enlisting!

RIGHT ON !!!! Congratulations !!!
The next step of a job choice is going to be interesting .... because you need to look at how it will set you up for success in the mid and long term. The ideals of a 17 year old and one at the upper age bracket are drastically different.
Are you at a point in your life where you think you might need to choose a career to stick with ... or are you just looking for something to pad your resume ??
Are you looking for something that will translate to the civilian life when you are done with the Navy ... or do you want to learn a variety of things so you have several choices at that time ??
There is no right or wrong answer to these questions. If you talk to 10 people you will get 10 or 11 different answers about what the right thing to do is. Consider THEIR background before you accept it for your own viewpoint. If they have not served in the military ... they may not be the best person to offer advice on which job will suit you the best.
You will hear the comment" What the heck would you do after the Navy as a Nuke ??" ~ or ~ "How many jobs do you think employ an aviation ordnanceman except the Navy ??" ~ or ~ "Intelligence ??? You think the FBI or CIA is putting out help wanted signs ??"". Brush this garbage off, my friend. Does nothing but cloud the issue and keep you from achieving your own goals.
If what you really want to do is only done in the Navy ... what is wrong with making it a career and collecting a retirement check at the end ?? Then you can do whatever YOU choose to do and not worry about starving to death !! (this was the mindset I took ...and I consider it a total success).
Just keep this in mind .... civilian employers today are not necessarily looking for someone who knows how to do the job ... they ARE looking for the person with the dedication, determination and military bearing to learn the job, do the job and do it RIGHT !! You pick up so many non-tangible skills in the military that are very hard to explain to someone who has not been through it. But if you have them and can use them ... you stand above your civilian counterparts.
I was a machinist and a shipboard firefighter with a background in Chemical, Biological and Radiological warfare .... but was hired immediately for the management skills I learned in the military. Not bragging .. just showing you that you can do whatever YOU want to do and still set yourself up for success.
If Nuke interests you ... go for it. If you have zero inclination for mechanical / engineering type jobs ... then keep looking. If you have a different interest that catches your eye ... bring it up on this site and let some of the active duty sailors give you some insight on what current advancement looks like for that job field.
Do your research and have a ball with it ... it's gonna be interesting to see what you come up with !!
Cheers,
