for god sakes wait. I bought a car before i left for boot. Bad idea. I ended up selling it right after A school. Don't bother, just wait it out.

i'm on steve with this one. def wait until you get to your command and settled in and you find out if you even need a car. But if you decide to get a be smart about it and dont rush into getting one.

Good advice... wait till you get to your first command and wait till you know if your being deployed or not.
It sucks to be deployed for 6 months or more and have to make car payments and insurance payments on something you can't drive.
If you need a car at whatever base you get too and you may be deployed in the next several months afterward then buy a good cheap $1500 or less car. That you can sell quickly or let sit for 6 months.
With a $1500 or less car you only have to keep liabilty insurance on it to drive and if something happens to it you haven't lost much. Your car pymnts and insurance for 6 months would be more than 1500. LOL...

WAIT !!!

Most bases have a "The Lemon Lot" which, despite the name, is where sailors buy and sell their second hand cars ... better to buy from a fellow sailor than to get ripped off just outside the base. ***** IN ANY CASE ... HAVE IT CHECKED OUT BY A COMPETENT MECHANIC FIRST !!!!

Some of those "Base Bruisers" have gone through 5-6 sailors in their life ... get's you from point A to point B at a fraction of the cost of a new car. I've been through SEVERAL of them .... great deal.

Cheers,

Please if you go that route in the end get it checked out. You'd think becuase 2 people are in the navy, and in the same situation that they would be honest during car sales and such. its pathetic the BS some of my coworkers go through with their vehicles bought here from other sailors. Truly Disgusts me at what is done to the car to make it appear to be in good condition.

Very true .... and keep in mind, Sailors are "inventive" people ... whatever it takes to keep the car running until your tour is done .... you may find some wild things in a car.

Have it checked out by a professional !!

I have an old diver buddy who had a VW van as his base bruiser .... he called it "The Love Tractor". He had to start it with a screwdriver jammed through the floorboard ... thing leaked exhaust fumes in the cab and was TOTALLY unsafe.

He absolutely LOVED that beast .... all of us on the ships Facebook site still laugh about that stupid thing cuz it's a wonder we didn't die from riding in it.
