Hello guys and gals,
Recent college grad here and doing a little soul searching as to what to do next. I majored in Criminology from FSU w/ great grades (top 1% of my class w/ 3.95 GPA) and for the last 2-3 years have felt pretty strongly that I would become a Law Enforcement Officer after I graduated. As of now, that is still the plan and I have 2 applications in w/ local agencies and 2 applications in w/ state agencies as well. However, the job market being the way that it is and the fact that I've never really worked before (dedicated all my time to school) and the fact that I'm so young (22) and lack life experience that they so eagerly seek, I foresee any job opportunities as a LEO being very, very competitive for me at this point in time. So, I realistically started to look at my options as of now and although becoming a LEO isn't too far fetched, I still wanted to consider other options and this is where the Navy comes into play. I can gain great life experience and skills applicable to my future goals of becoming a LEO while putting some money in my pocket and getting to travel the world at the same time. Now, if I did this I would want to enter as an Officer and was considering something in the Aviation field. I'm not necessarily wanting to be a pilot but I would like a rate that has me either on the flight deck or as a crewman of some sort. I don't really want something that's confined to the lower portions of the ship, if that makes sense. I've been searching the web and cannot seem to find a comprehensive list of rates for Officers that involve these types of activities. Are these type of rates available to Officers or are they enlisted type rates? As you can tell I'm fairly new to all this and a little fuzzy on all the particulars.
Also, if I enter/enlist as an Officer, how does that process differ from a normal enlistee in regards to the order of school/boot camp/general duties? Given the information about my prior academics and future career goals are there any particular routes/rates that anyone would suggest/advise? Some of you I'm sure might suggest MA but from what I've read that rate is overstaffed and they primarily are stationed at Naval bases rather than at sea. I could be wrong (and probably am :undecided:) but I think I'd rather be on a ship than stationed at a base.
I'm sure I'll have more questions as this idea rattles around in my head, so expect me back .
Any help/advise/insight provided is greatly appreciated.
