Thought I would go ahead and introduce myself.
My name is Randy Benjamin and I'm currently in DEP as of now, waiting to ship out on March 1st of next year (2010) for RTC. I will be training as an Intelligence Specialist and I'm quite excited about it.

One question preferably for the ones already in the Navy please:

What exactly will my job entail (what to expect in training, will I be carrying out my work on a ship or at a base, where do most IS's get shipped to, etc...) ? I've been researching a lot about it but it seems like the information I tend to find is very redundant and not helpful.

Help anyone? :)

Thanks a lot! Nice to meet all of you.

I just wanted to say welcome Aboard .... I will yield the floor to one of the active IS folks about the day-to-day work.

I was stationed with a few IS's who worked at the SEAL unit ..... shore duty, very busy people putting together briefs and presentations for the staff at EUCOM and SOCOM.

Cheers,

Thank you sir for welcoming me aboard! It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm sure you can help me with other questions as well -- mainly about boot camp.

I've heard from many people that the main aspect of the PT portion is to just be able to run a lot...is this true? If not, what should I mainly concentrate on?

I will have my Sailor's Creed, Rank recognition, and General Orders memorized by the time I get there (which I hear is of paramount importance).

Overall, what I'm asking is...what should I expect in my time window from RTC to Tech to my first tour of duty, haha anything would help.

Thanks!

Easy on the "Sir" stuff .... I work for a living !! Hahaha

PT .... Run a lot. You are only required to run 1.5 miles to pass the standard Navy PT test however we just don't do it that way. You really need to be able to cruise through 3 miles fairly comfortably in order not to have a real hard time in Bootcamp.
Push-ups & sit-ups ..... again, the requirement is not that difficult to attain, however you need to shoot for at least twice the requirement for your age. There should be no reason a young man such as yourself shouldn't be able to pump out at least 50 of each in one shot BEFORE you reach bootcamp. Most can't or won't and those are the ones who complain that they have a hard time.

Another thing to work on is your core muscle groups. Put yourself in the push-up position and hold for 30-45 seconds. Then do the same with only one arm (swap after 30-45 seconds). As you progress with this, lift a leg at a time.
This will strengthen your core stomach, chest and arm muscles and does wonders for the other exercises.

I'll let the new sailors fill you in on the day to day stuff .... been over 20 years since I've been in bootcamp and A-school.

yea with those core muscle groups.. you will find yourself in the up or down position of a pushup for a long time. Dont be the guy that cant do it and makes everybody else suffer longer ;)

I wouldn't do the leg lift or incorporate any weights (2-5 lbs) for a while ... build up to it. Start off with shorter times ... 15 seconds each time starting with both arms, then right arm, both arms, then left arm and then take a minute break and do it again.
MAKE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR STOMACH MUSCLES TIGHT AND YOUR BACK STRAIGHT THROUGH THE ENTIRE EXERCISE !!!

Do this for a few days and then bump it up to 20 seconds. Few more days and add to it again until you get to 30 seconds. If your arms are shaking at that point then it is still doing you some good.

When you feel pretty good and can make it through 2-3 sets of this ... then start doing the leg thing. Try it with one leg up then the other. I recommend to step the time up like you do the arms.

After a while, if you feel kinda froggy ... do one leg and the opposite arm.
This probably sounds like I'm BS-ing you ... and when you actually try it, you'll be certain that I am ... but this works muscles that haven't seen work in years !!!

Then grab a 2lb, or for the guys a 5lb weight and hold that in whatever hand is elevated. Draw it straight up to your chest and hold it there. Same times apply. I used to train with the 5lb ones 3 days out of the week and then 10lb weights for the other two days and we did MANY repetitions !!

Mix these exercises up with push-ups thrown in between.... that will stretch the muscles and make you feel a little looser.

This group of core muscle exercises plus crunches / sit-ups will put the six-pack on you big time and also really helps the back muscles support your spine better.

heck no I'm just lucky I can hold myself up i have no upper body strength I figure I'd do it a few times a day to get used to it...I really don't think I have ever done a push up in my life...can't do the one arm yet either well not for very long at least but I will get there doesn't help when I am still recovering from a sprained wrist =(
