I am thinking of joining the navy and I have already talked to a recruiter as well as started studing for an asvab test. I am also going after my G.E.D. and trying to lose 90lbs at the same time.

First question. How high of a score do I need to get on my asvab to get in with a G.E.D.? I was told that it had to be higher than a person with a HS Diploma but was not told the score.

Second question. I have slight asthma and I am hoping that it will go away once I drop the weight and get in better shape but I was wondering if they checked your medical records to find out your med history when the give you the physical at meps?

Third question. My dad was an OS2 and I like to play video games and use computers. How high on my asvab would I need to score in order to get that rate and would you recommend it?

Thanks for viewing my post and I hope you'll have answers to my questions.

The generasl rule for those with a GED is you need a 50 on your ASVAB...but things may have changed...ask your recruiter to make sure. On the Asthma question...yes, they will check your medical records, if a doctor has prescribed medication for you, unfortunetly that can be a drop dead deal breaker.
Here is a ruling I found, however it is dated 2004.
The Department of Defense has softened their medical qualification standards for cases of childhood asthma, and history of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Asthma
Previously, any history of asthma was disqualifying, regardless of age. While medical waivers were sometimes possible, waiver approval usually required scheduling and passing a pulmonary function test. Under the new policy, Asthma is only disqualifying if it occurs after the applicant’s 13th birthday.

Medical record screening may still be required, depending on the applicant’s medical history. However, in many cases, a signed statement, attached to the medical pre-screening form, stating that the applicant did not have any type of asthma (including exercise induced, or allergic asthma) or treatment for asthma after their 13th birthday will be sufficient.

Applicants who’ve experienced asthma or reactive airway disease after age 13 will require all medical do***entation. Waivers may still be considered, depending on the applicant’s medical history and – possibly results from a pulmonary function test.

As far as the OS rate, here is the info for that rate..but the #2 just means he was a Petty Officer 2nd class
Operation Specialists (OS) function as
plotters, radio-telephone and Command and
Control sound-powered telephone talkers and
maintain Combat Information Center (CIC)
displays of strategic and tactical information.
Operate surveillance and altitude radars’
Identification Friend or Foe (IFF), and associated
equipment. Serve as Air Traffic Controllers for
helicopters and fixed-wing supersonic jet aircraft.
Serve as watch supervisors and section leaders;
interpret and evaluate presentations and tactical
situations and make recommendations to
supervisors during watch conditions. Apply a
thorough knowledge of doctrine and procedures
applicable to CIC operations contained in U. S.
Navy Instructions and Allied or U.S. Navy
Publications and procedures necessary for radar
navigation contained in Naval Oceanographic
Office publications. Provide to the command
technical information and assistance related to
Anti-Surface Warfare, Anti-Air Warfare, Anti-
Submarine Warfare, Amphibious Warfare, Mine
Warfare, Naval Gunfire Support, and search and
rescue operations, and other matters pertaining
to the Operations Specialist’s area.
Qualifications
Operations Specialists must be U.S. citizens and
be able to meet all security clearance
requirements. A good working knowledge of
arithmetic, the capability for understanding modern
computing devices, the ability to speak and write
well and function as a member of an integrated
team, do detailed work and keep accurate records,
some physical strength and good manual dexterity
are important qualifications

Can anyone tell me how hard it is to get a medical waiver?

That can depend on how hard your recruiter works for you to get you in..I have seen waivers granted in as little as one month and as long as 6 months. My oldest son had to have a waiver for the Army as he was prior enlisted and needed a medical waiver to get back in...it took 6 weeks. But his was not for a DQ type of medical problem.

heres what I will tell you about asthma.
What they dont know, wont hurt em.
If you have it really bad, you can try.. but if it shows up in bootcamp your done.
I know quite a few people who tried to get in, even 1 saying his asthma was cleared when he was 10 years old and had do***ents to prove it. They said no to him.
They do not check previous medical records.

Here is what I found. If you get a High security clearance then they will check your medical records and you will get court marshaled and get a Dishonorable Discharge with no chance of ever going into the MIL ever again.

Okay just read that.
1. its an administrative discharge, not a dishonorable.
2. I already told you that if your asthma is gone your fine, but if it shows up your boned.
3. they wont look for your medical history, unless something happens like you fall out for asthma.

yep, every incident that includes asthma there includes you falling out because of it.

Hummm...when my son went in the Navy as a nuke, he had to sign a release for them to check his medical records...AND THEY DID BEFORE he left for Great Lakes. We are from a very small town and I know our doctor personally. I saw him at the bank and he told me the Navy had sent in an inquiry about my son so he could enlist in the Navy. So was this normal or only because he went nuke?
