Hello all,

Been reading the forums for a few weeks now and I have a feeling this site will keep me a lot of company during my Navy career.

So, is there really that much bias against older people joining the service? I am 30 and can honestly say I've been trying to convince myself to go in since I was 17 and I finally got to the point where I am ready. I can get into the original reason for backing out if anyone is curious.

And just a word of advice to anyone else going to the recruiter, you can't go to MEPS with an open court case lol. (Old identity theft credit card issues). But as soon as I get that paid off its Hurry up and Wait and off to the Great lakes I go.

Hoping to get IS or CT, but with my financial past and 1 DUI I'm not so sure a top secret clearance is in my future. What are the thoughts on IT as a fallback?

Thank you all for supporting your Sailors and I look forward to talking to you all soon.

IT rocks mang. I love the rate. You dont need a Top Secret, but your going to be put in for one. and As long as you admit you had a DUI and stuff like that, you'll be fine as long as you dont have outstanding horrid debt when you go for your interview.
I wouldnt think of IT as a fallback man, I hate when people do that. ITs go Everywhere, Ct's are very limited to what they do and where they go.

when it all comes down to it, ITs run the ships. ships would have no place to go, no mission, no nothing without ITs. Its definitely up their in the top most important jobs.

Sorry,

I didn't mean IT as a backup in a bad way. I just worked in the field for years and kind of burnt out and was looking for something a little different. I love IT just was thinking about a change.

Have already told them about the DUI and everything else. As far as my debt goes, its the one open case (roughly 1100 left to pay off) and some other collections from the past that are all paid off. The only open loan I have is for my car which is current.

Will surely keep you all posted.

And to the folks trying to drop those last few pounds just keep at it. Used to weigh 300 myself (180 now). It takes time but you get there.

I am going to give you some advice that my step-father gave me. He told me you are going to see a lot of different opinions(some harsh) no matter where you go. I am 18 and have already begun to see the different views of people who are both in the navy and outside the navy. you get used to it though. dont listen to what other people have to say though. you do what you think is best. i am the master at arms in the dep school and i have to tell older people what to do. it feels weird but it is your job.

So you've worked with crypto machines before? setting up circuits for LF, EHF and HF waves? You've receieved messages that can be anything form baseball scores to launching nukes?

You have the wrong idea about the IT rate.

Perhaps I do, perhaps I do lol.

I wasn't kidding. But if you want to sit there and discredit the IT rate go ahead. just remember the term AIP.. so when you join, you get really mad ;)

Of course ..... the IT's would have to ROW the ships all the way to Hawaii if it wasn't for the "Snipes" in the Engineering Department making the screws turn and the rudders steer :kiss:

Ok,

First off I meant no disrespect to the IT rating, if it came off that way it wasn't meant to. Last apology I'll be making for it though.

Secondly, my court case is closed and I go to MEPS next week. :cheesy:

and where does the ship get the information on where to go? W/o IT's said "snipes" would just be sitting on their asses waiting for the message pigeon to arrive ;)

True .... but we'd be the ONLY ones with cold A/C and a hot shower every night. The first valves and electrical breakers that we shut off when we're feeling pissy are the ones that lead above the Main Deck !!

IT's can shut off the email but that would only make matters worse ... Snipes don't always smell too good and we've been known to roll around in bearing grease and then hop in some poor IT's rack while they are up there reading their email.

And besides, forcing a Snipe to sit on his ass is like forcing Paris Hilton to spend money ..... you'll find no argument at all, in fact ... we'll volunteer !!:biggrin:

God I miss the Navy !!!

PISTOL

All I've noticed about the older guys (myself included) in DEP is that we realize what we're getting into. I think it comes from having had to work for a while and take care of yourself. No offense to the younger cats out there. Also, you won't have to worry about Zero Tolerence. I keep hearing stories of underaged kids getting kicked out.

Just an update. Took the ASVAB yesterday. Got a 96. Got DQ'ed during medical today though for my left eye and some stuff they need to check for a hernia I was born with. They are saying everything should still go through I just need to go see a couple of specialists for some consults. Wish me luck. I was really excited, still have hope...just made for a rough day at MEPS is all :(

Quick update.

Go to my extra medical consults on Monday the 6th. I should pass from what they tell me and I really hope I do. Looking forward to being a Sailor, or at least taking another step towards the goal.
