I go to bootcamp in October of 2009, and will go into Nuclear Power Program. Also, I will get bachelor's degree aboard the ship (PACE program). I am planning to go to Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (NASA in Houston) to become a physicist. In order to do that, I want to get a Ph.D in physics in University of Houston first, but I know that I have to get a Master's degree in there first. The main question is: if I take Master's degree course for my physics, then do I have to take additional required courses (such as literature and stuff, but I HAAAAAAAAATE literature, and history/politics as well). I hope that I can take courses that I only want to take, such as mathematics, physics, and additional courses that I like, such as music.
Please reply, and thank you!

Unfortunetly...YUP, you will need to take those courses that are required. My son is a nuke, and he wants to get his degree as well. But you wont be able to get your classes on board ship until after you gets all your quals done first, then you will have time. Believe me, those nuke quals are NOT easy to finish off...think of SEVERAL 3 inch thick 3 ring binders worth! Some cannot be signed off until you are out to sea for some time...so some of the ones my son needs still wont be done til they deploy this summer. He has been almost done for a few months now, just waiting to get out to sea to finish!

woa woa woa slooow doown. you dont even ship for many months let alone go to a ship. 1. I hate to be the devils advocate but you dont know if your going to get through nuke school (Good luck, I hope you do honestly).
2. Doing school time can be very hard on a ship, you dont exactly have "days off".
3. IIRC the GI bill only covers 80k. Im pretty sure you have to spend more then that to get all the way up to a Ph.D.
I would worry about this stuff a bit down the road mang.
