I am only 17 and in the DEP. I'm going to be a Senior in High School next year so i should be heading to basic next summer. I'm always processing the thought that once I sign that paper to serve my country for 4 years, my whole life is going to change. I practically get to start a new life at only god knows were in this world. I really want to know what the best part about being in the Navy is. Hopefully some of you guys can tell me (also parents, whats the best part about being a navy mom/dad).
Thanks,
Cody

WELCOME...the best part is different for most everyone. In my family it is tradition to be in the military, so my sons both are in, one navy, one army. Do you know what rate/job you want to do in the navy?

I was thinking of going towards the law Enforcement and Security or Medical and Firefighting. I'm also going to try for SWCC. The Job part of this whole expierence is the most challenging for me.

the best part Ive gotta say about being in the navy.. the people. sure theres always those *******s. But generically you make friends very fast. and everybody gets paid at the same time, so everybody goes out and parties at the same time ;).

Honestly thats the part that I'm most excited for. Highschool to me hasn't always been that great, so im excited to get out and meet new people and start with the rest of my life. thanks.

Meaning don't be the dude that just sits back, doesn't talk, pretty much the loner of the company? hahaha

don't be the dude who talks to much either. there was a guy who went to meps with me who talked so much that the prospect of being stuck on a ship (or god forbid a sub) with him for a whole commission almost made me not enlist.

There is a time and a place for everything .... just make sure you have your night safely planned to get you back onboard in one piece !!

I did a dozen port calls to Lahaina, Maui and spent several long nights on the pier because I staggered back to meet the last liberty boat ... in time to see the little red/green/white lites fade away into the night without me. Wouldn't advise that in 90% of the other ports I have visited.

*** Okinawa Japan has the loooooongest pier you will ever crawl !!
