Sorry to have to bring this up online but I was hoping that someone could give me some pointers or head me in the right direction. For those of you who don't know me, my husband joined the Navy about 4 months ago...leaving me with 3 black labs (our "children") to take care of. I LOVE dogs, but it has been so difficult to manage things on my own plus give enough attention to them. I'm hoping to join my husband at his current location and within the near future we would like to start a family. I've realized I can't handle all of the dogs plus the future additional little one(s), esp when he leaves on his long duration tours. I'm hurting like crazy to know that I will have to give away one of them and am having the hardest time finding her a new home...one that she will feel completely wanted, loved and be given attention. Does anyone know of someone who rescues labs or a website that I can go to? I've looked up rescue sites but it just shows that ones that are up for adoption, not people looking. I'm sure some of you have had to go through the same experience. I'm trying to stay positive and knowing she would have a better life elsewhere but at the same time I'm bogged down with guilt and heartache. She is part of our family and I feel like a bad parent. I know I can posts pics at vet clinics and petstores, but the thought of giving her to someone I don't know makes me sick to my stomach. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for hearing me out.

HI Carly, I know you are having a tough time with this decision but at the same time it's going to bring you closer to Adam!!! I don't think I could ever give up my kitty so I know how you feel. Try posting an AD on Craigslist, its free and you can post pictures of her. This will allow you to be able to meet with people, have some trial runs and what not. I still wish we were both going to be in CT together!!!! Talk to you soon chica =o) *Hugs*

You should contact the breeder FIRST! Who ever bred that dog should have first chance to get it back...you can also contact the breed club and ask for their help. Have you talked to your husband about placing one of your family pets? As I am a breeder of dogs, I know I would appreciate being called to see if I would like one of mine back or I can find an appropriate home for it. Try this and contact the club directly.... http://www.thelabradorclub.com/

sweetmtn,
All of my dogs are strays. I took Sadie in about 1.5years ago. She was roming around my Mom's neighborhood. Looked for signs and ads...no one was missing a dog. We got her before we knew Adam was going to join the Navy. I know that Navy housing doesn't allow more than two pets. I will definitely check out the website. Thanks for the info. She's not pure bred...she's got long haired retriever in her as well. Will contacting the club still help???

WOW...not being a purebred, they may not help you. But you can always ask them, and see if they can recommend someone who could.

Jennifer,
I like to consider Sadie a "free spirit"! She's trained to sit, shake and not go to the bathroom in the house!!! Thank you, Ashley and Darlene for the sweet thoughts and concerns. I'm coming into better grips with the whole scenario. The time is going by so quickly that I need to get with it and take some pics to the vet and local petstores. Pray for a good home for her!!!:) Thanks again!

We rescued a dog from the local shelter and are now paying for heartworm treatment for the little guy. I am not sure how shelters are in AL but here in SC the pets find homes and they move the pets around to the local SPCAs to make sure they find a home. A couple of friends have bought dogs off of craigslist. I hope that you find her a good home. I know how difficult it can be to give up a part of the family.

Thanks Poddoc,
That's when you realize a "free" dog is never free huh???:) Your dog is lucky to have you and to be taken such good care of! I couldn't allow myself to take Sadie to the pound. I couldn't do that to her...I know she would feel completely abondoned and I imagine be extremely scared. The one time I went to the pound, it made me cry. It's a sad situation these poor animals have to face, although I love to hear success stories and positive outcomes! Thanks for your input and sincere words. I've put an ad online and only gotten one bite so far. And it was a woman that already had 2 dogs and was wanting to talk to her husband about it...didn't sound like a good situation to me. I know the right one will come along!

I would just start talking to people you already know. We did that with one of our friends dog once. Once you start telling people then they'll tell others about a black lab that needs a home I'm sure someone will want to take the dog in...good luck!

You can go to an animal rescue too and see if they'll take her in. My sister had to do that with one of her dogs. She couldn't afford him at the time and she took him in to this place called Second Chance Rescue... they do background checks on people before letting them take the dogs and they do trial runs. Try going into an animal rescue place in your area and meet with them?
