my ship date isnt until 2010302! i was pretty mad that i had to wait that long but im still young and when i do leave i will only be 19 so i've come to terms with it and im happy. my recruiters where trying to get my to switch to intelligence specialist so i could leaver earlier because i requested to do so but i like my DC designation and am gonna stick with it.
THANKS CHIEF! how did u like being a DC?

You need to have your recruiter put in for an early ship date as a DC-man .... if someone else who has this program decides to drop out of DEP or even during bootcamp ... you could get to ship out early. I am really not a big fan of long DEP times ... never have been.
I was a machinist for the first 10 years of my career but was always on the fire teams and was as qualified as high as you could be and not be a DC-man. There was a lot more that I wanted to learn and do .... so the swap to DC was an easy one.
There were aspects of the job that I didn't care for ... like CBR warfare (Chemical, Biological, Radiological). Had to learn decay times for radiation and that kinda blows for me. The live agent training at our "C" school was cool ... scary but cool. We got suited up in full gear and enter a room with actual VX nerve gas. Sure makes you appreciate your training !! Hahaha
What I really liked about the DC rate was the fact that there is very few people onboard (other than maybe the captain, the Executive Officer and the Damage control Assistant) that knows the ship like you will. You will be intimately familiar with pretty much every single space on the ship because of how much pertains to damage control.

Here are a couple vids that I found .... the first one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diA-v2RiJKk&feature=related is from a fire fighting "team trainer" in Yokosuka, Japan. Petty Officer Baldado worked for me on the USS Mt. Vernon before he began teaching at this school ... probably one of the most knowledgeable DC men I know. Could quote obscure things out of almost any damage control manual ... great trainer.
This one gives a pretty good idea what the training will be like ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCyyc4pCkao&feature=related .
Kinda goes off on a tangent when talking about the shore based fire fighting ... I guess they tie it together at some point (I quit watching after a while).

DC is a pretty cool job. you get your own special version of coveralls ;)
And if you dont decide to make it a career, you could probably get out and get a job very quickly as a firefighter.
IS, is more intelligence (obviously right?) you will get a high security clearance.. when you get out, once again if you didnt decide to make it a career, you can get a job with the DoD doing something intelligence related.. that makes crazy cash.
They are both good choices, 2 totally different worlds, choose one and ride ;)
Good Luck!
