hey i am about to join the rescue swimmer program and i heard from an aircrew rescue swimmer stationed in san diego that all you do is ride around in the helicopter as an aircrewman working on the helicopter and never get to do any rescues or even practice them. he said that he new 3 guys that were rescue swimmers for 12 years and none of them have saves. do any of you have any info about whether this is true or not.

i have already done the swear in and everything i just need to take the pst for rescue swimmer...but i am thinking twice about it since i talked to one guy who is a rescue swimmer and he said they don't do shit accept work as aircrew members. but my recruiter said that they are expanding the program and now they are doing mountain rescues and other stuff...so my recruiter is saying that you get to do a lot of saves. so i don't know who is telling the truth.

why dont you wait til you go through bootcamp dude lol. do what you want, not what others recommend.
and for god sakes stop thinking like your a super hero. if a save is needed, do it. the way your sound is coming off, is a quick way to get killed.

The job of the Navy Air Rescue Swimmer is to respond to OUR emergencies ........ which if we are doing things right .... won't be often. Occasionally, you may lend a hand to someone else if the situation dictates.
The Coast Guard responds to EVERYONE ELSES emergencies ..... the number of rescues would probably boggle your mind.
That stuff looks cool on TV .... but when you are getting rolled in 30* surf with debris & fodder in the water ... yeah !!

Its very sweet that you're concerned about saves, but is that all you look into at the job? Try expanding your search on rescue swimmers, I really don't think it'd be that bad to fly around in a helicopter during the day. You never know when something is going to happen. Look into what you want... if the helipcopter thing doesn't interest you in the slightest then consider talking to your recruiter about it and about what you are looking for. I'm sure he can help you out, and if he doesn't have something to offer than I'm sure he can give you the name or service of someone who can help.
