Brand new to the site and to being a Navy wife. We just got married this past February and my husband is stationed in Naples, Italy. I'll be making the move out there in less than a month and am trying my best to prepare myself mentally and emotionally for this huge change. I'm mostly excited, but definitely a little scared. I've never ventured that far out of California for more than a couple of weeks, but soon I'll call Naples home for almost 2 years. I'm just looking to get to know people who are stationed in Naples already, or have been, or who just have some good advice for all the idle time I'll have for the first couple of months while I'm getting settled in Naples and my husband is working. I'm certainly not a shy person, but I'm definitely not the most adventurous so my biggest fear is that I'll sit around in our house all day with cabin fever and act like a hyper-active dog when he gets home, lol. "Hi, hey, what's up? Wanna go somewhere? What's up? Hi!" ;) The newly wed phase will end very quickly if that's the case, hahaha. Any and all advice is welcome!

Welcome and congratulations on the orders to Naples !!!

Yes, it will be a culture change but there are LOTS of resources available to you to make sure that you don't become a hermit in your own home !!

Make yourself very familiar with MWR (Morale, Welfare and Recreation) department and the USO (United Serviceman's Organization) ..... they are the key to keeping you entertained and to help you get great deals on travel to the surrounding parts of Europe !!

Also .... stop in and meet the folks at the Family Service Center on base. They have excellent resources for you if you start getting the blues about being away from what is familiar to you and begin to feel "trapped". Not everyone feels like this ... but if it happens to you it is nice to know that there is someone to help.

I advise that you start gearing up for your move NOW !! Research on the geography and people who live there. The local cultures and foods ..... pick up a Rosetta Stone language course and start learning the language (helps when you go shopping for treasures out in town !!!). Plan for the differences in the way you will furnish your home .... the power voltage is different there so you will need adapters when you arrive. Some places over there (not necessarily in Naples) do not use closets ... they use large cabinets called shrunks. Your kitchen appliances will be different .... learn your metric system and temperatures in Celsius.

You are going to have a really good time .... just keep an open mind and go with the flow !! They do things differently over there ... don't fight it, just accept it.

Cheers,
PISTOL

:) WOW!! That's definitely a big move!

Congratulations on becoming a wife, that is a huge step alone! ^-^

I certainly would be nerve-wrecked from all that planning and getting ready to move. I'm sure it will be such a wonderful experience once you get out there and get settled.

Welcome to the Navy Cafe! Glad to have you aboard.

Thanks so much! :) I'm extremely excited, but I keep scouring the internet to find information but there's so much it's wholly overwhelming. I guess making a move across the world isn't supposed to be easy, lol. Thanks again, and I'll definitely be making good use of MWR and USO :)

You can request a Welcome Aboard package from the Family Service Center in Naples .... that will give you the best info for the location and should give other web links that will guide you through the process .... like housing and schooling etc.

Cheers,

I only suggested the rosetta Stone deal because it is the best one out there .... the military uses it in the linguist training programs. It is a little pricey ... but there is always Ebay
