there are many different parts of being an MA. You can be doing anything from checking ID's to working with drug dogs. It all kind of depends on how your attitude is, and if they like you honestly. A few people Ive talked to don't like their job, because all they do is Check ID's. I've talked to 2 who love being an MA, they work with drug dogs. I'm pretty sure they all checked ID's at one point, its just a matter of who decided to let their thoughts show through emotions (something I've had experience myself doing, and is not a good idea ;)) and decided they hate their job right off the back.

Most of the MA's that I know absolutely LOVED their jobs .... especially when they spent the extra time to gain the qualifications necessary to do the cool jobs.
However ... if you choose to do the minimum ... there is always THOSE kind of jobs to do as well.

Well MA's dont check ID's anymore on bases anyways, we patrol the base ashore and on water, anti terrorism, inspections, and general law enforcement, but if you go IA (individual augmentee) then you will work with marines/army in Afghanistan and Iraq, K9 youll do ALL the presidential events (they ONLY us Navy K9), but youll also be deployed alot to countries around the world.
anything else you want to know just ask.

I would LOVE to make a wager against that... I mean you're an MA so you should know... right?

every base I've been on, and every base any of my friends (who are MA's)are on, they dont check ID's, ussually civilian and DOD employee's do that.

Checking ID's is NOT a big deal and it really doesn't set the tone for what an entire career as an MA will be.
In many instances, MA's do stand at the gate and check ID cards. Hello ... that is part of Physical / Base Security isn't it ???
That being said ... not every base or command uses their MA's for this purpose. Some bases don't have the manpower to do this ... so they put together what is called the Auxillary Security Force (ASF) .... which is a group of non-MA sailors who take the initiative to get some security training and assist the MA force in whatever area they need ... access control (ID check), traffic control or just putting on some kevlar and grabbing a 12 ga. to maintain perimeter security. I did this for 4 years as a junior sailor ... had a blast !! After I made Chief and assigned to shore duty ... I rotated my sailors through the ASF for 6 months at a time. This not only helped maintain the base security but it also gave my people some excellent training and awards for their record ... helped them advance to the next rank when the competition was tough.
Some bases have contracted the duties of gate access and ID checks to a civilian force .... this frees up the MA's to do other aspects of the rate AND to allow them to deploy to forward operating bases. Guantanamo prison is one place that you may have heard of .... MA's are doing LOTS of things like this overseas.
Bottom line is .. each job in the military has some less than glamorous aspects and you may end up being assigned to them at some point. Not really a big deal ... jump on it with enthusiasm, gain the experience that comes with it, advance in pay grade and then move on to bigger and better things !!
Cheers,

Well, whatever they do, I am guessing it will look good for LE in the civilian world, which is what I want to do when I get out, after I get in, lol! I can deal with checking IDs to get higher up. It is the nature of things, and develops responsibility through ranks. You get that in everything, not just the military.

FUNNY..when you get out of the Navy later and apply to be a cop/sheriff/patrol officer somewhere..they do not give a rats a$$ what you did in the military, just that you WERE in the military! So your rate/job wont matter.
^that is correct lol, as long as you dont have anything bad or your record they dont really care, Im donig it more for the experience and its what I enjoy.

Absolutely correct !!! Employers today are so happy just to have someone who will show up every day, on time and have the dedication and initiative to put in a full days work for a full days pay. Military instills that kind of work ethic.
