Hey all!

I am 18 and thinking about joining NAvy. I checked many careers and think that the most suitable is World Languages But ...

1) Can Green Card Holders work as translators in Navy? I am native russian speaker, also spreak Armenian and have 2 university courses of Arabic.(My arabic is advanced)

2)What is period of Active Service for translators? Or its clear when you sign contract?(minimum is 4 years?))

3) Can I become USA citizen during service?

4)WIll me and my mother gain medical insurance during my service?

5) When does Active Service Start? As I in bott camp? Or as studies for my profession are completed?

I am sorry that I ask so mnay questions but I didnt find answers in navy.mil and navy.com...:sooohot:

I am proud that USA allowed our family to immigrate and live here! Now I want to serve! I am just 18 and think that Navy will change me and make a new person.:biggrin:

Wow I was sure someone with more knowledge would have come along to answer all your questions.

I can answer 4 and 5 but someone else will need to answer the others.

You will have medical coverage but your mother will not and she cannot go to the NEX without you either. Only a spouse and children share in your benefits.

Active service starts when you start boot camp.

Hope you get the rest of your questions answered.

I hope someone corrects me if I am wrong, but yes you can serve with a green card. In fact it will allow you to become a permanent citizen quicker (I believe you are eligible after 6 months). I think that there are stipulations on which jobs you can take (due to security clearances) until you are a citizen. If you do a google search there are articles that have been written on immigrants serving in the military. As for your last questions: No your mother will not be covered unless you make her your dependent (if she is unable to care for herself financially). Good luck!
