Hey everyone,

I am currently in the enlistment process. I told my recruiter that I was ready to take the Asvab test next week. I was wondering if anyone knew how the scoring worked. I know that every section has its own seperate score, and certain jobs have different sections that need to add up to a minimal score. I just dont know how you get the individual section scores. Is it a percentage of amount you got correct or what?

I was also wondering if the Navy has a buddy program? I know the Army and Marines have what they call Battle Buddies. They deploy together and do missions together most of the time (not all the time is guaranteed though). I have a friend that is going through the process the same time I am, if the Navy doesnt have this we are hoping to atleast go through boot camp together.

Also does anyone know if the Navy has 'hands to bathe'? (Where the boat stops in the middle of the ocean and they throw a cargo net over the edge and you are allowed to jump off and swim in the ocean) I know the royal navy has it and a buddy of mine said he did it when he was aboard one of the submarines in the Navy, but I wasnt sure if every boat does it, or any boat does it.

Thanks in advance,
Jamie

'hands to bathe' is called swim call on the ships i've been on...

you're right about the ASVAB, but i'm not sure how the scoring is done. just score high and you can do anything you want in the navy.

as far as i know, there's not a "buddy system" in the navy...well at least i've never heard about it.

what are you looking to get into as far as a job goes...i just want to make sure the recruiter doesnt leave something out like they're known to do =].

Welcome,,,
No battle buddies..... you might luck out and get boot camp together if you are going in at the same time. But depending upon the needs of the Navy and the rating you pick will determine when either one of you go to boot camp.
But the Navy is more technical related than ground pounder battle related. (Battle buddies are ones that are mainly just ground troups and not technical jobs in any of the branches.
Do you have something that you are interested in doing in the Navy besides jumping off and swimming in the ocean? (don't mean to be crass on that comment - just coudn't think of a nicer way to put it).

The buddy program lets you and your buddy head off to bootcamp together. Good program.

I miss swim call on the ship. Best one was off the coast of Maui. Nothing cooler than swimming with the migrating whales ... the babies are sure curious.

haha yes there is other stuff I want to do in the navy besides jumping off the boat and swimming in the ocean, although swimming with whales sounds fun. (even the curious babies) Right now I am looking at being a Aviation Warfare Systems Operator in the aircrew program, or also thinking about maybe a Damage Controlman.. not too sure which one I want to choose yet. But first is first gotta score decent on the asvab for them.

So Pistol you say there is a buddy program that atleast lets us get bootcamp?

Thanks everyone for the input

Yeah, there is a buddy program for boot camp as far as I am aware. Nothing after that is really guaranteed, or even close from what I know. It would have been really nice to have a buddy through boot camp through. You will make lots of friends, but having one from home would be really nice for the first week or two when you don't know anybody else. Don't let that keep you from socializing with your shipmates though.

Very true .... you will find that over time, you will be closer to your shipmates than most of your friends back home. Many of them you will consider family.

I live a couple hours away from one of my old shipmates ... known him for about 17 years. My kids call him Uncle.
