I joined the DEP program roughly three months ago. The following month I got a DUI (Bad, I'm aware it was a mistake and I got picked off). Today I went to court and it did not get dismissed, so I will have a misdemeanor on my record. My RINC will write me a waiver, but he doesn't know for sure about the security clearance I will need to go to Nuke School. I'm wondering if anyone has information on any of this, or knows if a waiver will still give me my security clearance because if I'm not a nuke anymore I'll be extremely upset. Anyone who knows information please post.

Yep ... you probably drank yourself right out of a nuke position. Did you get a sign-on bonus with the nuke job ?? If so ... the bonus is probably gone too ... that was an expensive party, eh ?
Not trying to rub salt in the wound, bud ... you probably feel bad enough already and will undoubtedly feel much worse once the money for the fines start rolling out of your bank account. You will need to get that completely settled PRIOR to shipping out to bootcamp. Start looking for a 2nd job to raise the x-tra money NOW !! Keep your recruiter posted on your progress too.
Funny thing about waivers ... I have seen a couple that I didn't think would fly, actually happen. Most of this nature do not .... so don't get your hopes up much at all.
The Navy is not like the Army in that respect ... we don't NEED to overlook these things to find candidates to fill the billets. With the Nuke program, we just need to wait and they will come through the door.
As a nuke, you would have been trusted with a lot of classified information, high dollar training and just by the nature of the job ... more responsibility than the average Sailor. It's a nuclear reactor for God's sake !!! Poor judgement is definately an issue when national security or safety is involved. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Navy require nothing less.
That being said ... don't think that your world has ended and that you are never going to find a way to be happy or productive without the nuke program. You aren't the first person that this has happened to ... I recruited a young nuke out of college and he got his DUI while he was in Prototype School !! Talk about a humble young man after that point. He had big plans for his bonus ... his honeymoon was not quite as "stellar" as he (and his bride) had hoped.... they spent it in a Bed & Breakfast in Boise instead of on the beach in the Bahamas !!
You will probably be kept in the same rate that you signed up for ... was it MM or EM ?? You will be assigned to ships and shore duty assignments just like all the rest of us. Maybe even a nuke ship ... but not working on the main propulsion. Still, excellent training and potential for an fantastic career !!!
Sorry to hear of your misfortune .... hang in there. Sailors NEVER give up the ship ... we just pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, cuss a little and and then get the job done !!

I'm with Pistol on this one...I wouldn't look forward to keeping a good clearance status. But, like he said, don't let this get you down. There are still a lot of jobs out here in the fleet for you. I dont know that I'd want to be a nuke anyway, I was going to go for it, but decided not to, and I'm glad I changed my mind. I know that before we pulled out for cruise all the Nukes werent allowed to leave the ship, they worked like we were underway. I'm sure that sucked...but there are downsides to every job, I guess that's just one for them. Keep your head up, and get that thing taken care of!

Just remember your not the first one to do that and probably won't be the last...
A friend of mine lost his medical school spot due to a dui.....
A dui to someone in medical school means they can never write RX's..... Which defeats the purpose of getting your degree....
But they are plenty of other good choices out there...
Good Luck.
