I've been seriously considering joining the Navy. I scored a 99 on the ASVAB and am very interested in the nuclear field. My recruiter has assured me that I will get into nuke school no problem. My question is this. Can I be guaranteed to go to Nuke school before I actually sign up? I don't want to swear in only to find out that I'm shipping off to some other school that I have no interest in. Will it be included in my enlistment contract? Is there any possible way, excluding shortcomings on my part, that I could end up as any rating other than Nuclear field? Also, any information/insights/advice concerning nuclear would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Your Navy counselor at MEPS will show you what you are eligibile for. If you go nuclear, that is what your enlistment contract will say. They won't switch you without you knowing about it.

That is correct and do not settle for anything less than you want...if they do not give it to you just say thank you but no thank you.....and wait till you get the job you want!

Great job on the ASVAB. My husband in Nuke and signed papers at MEPS to guarantee his job. He is currently in Power School in Goose Creek, SC. Once you head to Nuke School (at the end of boot camp I think) you will be told if you are EM, MM, or ET which you can request which job you want but you get placed where their needs are. My husband is MM and enjoys it because it is more "mechanical". He has already passed A-School which was 3 mos, Power School is 6 mos, and Prototype School is 6 mos. For prototype you can stay in SC or go to NY. Good luck.
