My daughter is a MA - let's see more gas chamber time, pepper spray, a lot of PT, how to detain a prisoner, first aid, cpr, more PT, how to put on and take off handcuffs properly....not sure what else, I'll ask her and let you know.

I think the A schools for MA are in San Antonio, Pensecola, and there might be one in great lakes

I don't remember if my son had to do the gas chamber again at his A school but he would have rather done that than the OC or pepper spray. That is awful.

Oh my Lord, the gas chamber is what scares me the most. I really don't like that our sailors have to go through that!! But whatever is required, I guess. That's one heck of a tough thing to do, I'd say.

I'm in MA A school now, first wk you'll get here you'll be on Holding and do odd's and ends jobs, 2nd week you'll do CPR,First Aid, and non lethal weapons(you'll leave MACH moves, baton, OC) and on that friday you'll take your test in the morning, then if you pass get OC sprayed(do the course). 2nd week you start weapons, starting with the m9(9mm) you'll sit in class for a couple days, take the test (if you pass) you will go qualify, then you'll do the tactical movements, and gas mask. go to class again for the m500 (shotgun) and go shoot the course, learn the m240 after that, and since WE STOPPED SHOOTING IT you'll go do the simulator if they finally fix it, then learn m16, go shoot and qualify for that. and take the test on your 3/4wk, then you'll do night fire/low light w/ the m9. (thats where I am now) and from what I've heard next wk is CBT's the WHOLE week, 6 tests in 5days all on the CBT's, and after that you do Day Op's which is basically employing the tactical things you've learned.

PT isent bad, just early and right now its tues, wed, thurs, but they are changing it to mon, wed, fri.

BTW I got my orders today too, which is like day 19 of training. I'm going to Groton CT, but who knows where you'll go. If you have any questions feel free to message me.

and the REAL MA A school is in San Antonio, they send very few to Dam Neck VA though. and there is no gas chamber just OC Spray, the gas chamber is NOTHING compared to OC spray, you'll find one when you get here why the instructors call in hot lovin lol.

pffffft I LOVED the gas chamber. i was actually laughing when I couldnt open my eyes and barely breathe. the best thing is if you go first and then you see everybody else come out. hahahah

you'll do ok, everyone passes it, they are very cool about it, but the bad part about OC is you have to do it once a yr until you get out lol.

Hello everyone,

I am a fleet returnee, and I have to report to San Antonio for MA school. I know nothing, just my report date. I was wondering where I check in, where are my living quarters and do I wear my summer whites the first day of school?

Seth
05-25-2010, 12:17 PM
you will go to the quarterdeck just live everyone else, preferably in your whites (im just assuming) they will tell you what to wear on your first day, but it will probably be your NWUs. good luck and have fun!

Does anyone know anything about promotion rates for MA. If you get in the top % of your class do you get an automatic promotion to E-4? Just wondering. Also, does your place in the class effect whether or not you get a choice in your duty station?

DK3

Welcome Aboard! Our resident MA is Seth.

To answer your questions, yes, everything you asked are possible but not automatic, push button to E4, better choice of duty location based upon where you place in class.

MA's from what I understand from Seth is pretty tight on advancements right now.

advancement is VERY tight right now, you will only get e4 if you get 95% and above on every test, get an outstanding high and shoot expert on all weapons.

robert(sdk)
08-17-2010, 09:30 PM
seth even then its possible to not get the promotion to 3rd class, we had a guy in our class that got that award but no advancement at all. we were also under the impression of the advancement but they said it was for e1s and e2s to go up one paygrade, e3s didnt qualify i guess

adambudd
08-19-2010, 10:16 AM
Interesting. Lets home advancement will open up I guess. I wasn't really counting on an automatic advancement, although it would be nice.

Any word on the current duty stations that are coming out, or how your place in a class effects if you get a choice or not?

Seth
08-23-2010, 07:53 PM
The higher you rank in your class the more options you will have, unless you go PRP. then you have no choice other than GA or Washington state.

DK3
08-23-2010, 07:58 PM
What's PRP?

Seth
08-23-2010, 08:03 PM
cant really say lol

DK3
08-23-2010, 08:04 PM
I would assume it is MA specific though?

EDIT TO ANSWER MY OWN QUESTION:

Yes, specific to MA.

I just googled Navy MA PRP. The gist of what I found, they provide security for the Nukes. In that case I would imagine those guys would also go to Naval Weapons Station (NWS) Yorktown in Virginia?

Seth
08-23-2010, 08:12 PM
nope lol

DK3
08-23-2010, 08:13 PM
No, what? NWS Yorktown? Why not?

Seth
08-23-2010, 08:21 PM
sorry lol, I didnt mean to put the post button, but they go to Kingsway GA and Washington State to guard the Nuke Subs.

DK3
08-23-2010, 08:26 PM
Good! That is strange, why wouldn't they also be in Groton? I know you wouldn't know the reason for that, just a question being thrown out in general.

robert(sdk)
08-30-2010, 02:10 AM
its not the subs themselves. im up in washington as we speak and we cant really say much except were on a sub base and we do security. PRP stands for personnel reliability program, its got its perk for bein a boring job haha

DK3
08-30-2010, 09:25 AM
So, you are a PRP I assume?

robert(sdk)

I'll be going to MA A school in June as a reservist. I really want to work with the MWDs but I think my chances getting into that program are extremely low since I'm not active duty. Do the instructors ask the new MAs there (both AD and Reserve) if they'd like to volunteer for K-9 school? Or better yet, were you or any of your shipmates asked if they'd like to work with the K-9s before graduating A school? Also, if I was given the opportunity to stay in Lackland for the MWD training, is there a possibility they'd make me switch over to AD instead of staying in the Reserve?

I'll be going into MA A school as an E-3 if that helps at all. Thanks in advance.

Seth
01-10-2011, 07:23 AM
You have an EXTREMELY low chance of getting MWD. They will not turn you active for it.

They asked 3 people in my class if they wanted MWD, all 3 (including myself) went up to a board, and it was offered to me. I declined after doing some research.

But now they are cutting down on the "pipeline" they want MA's who have some experience in the law enforcement/force protection side of things now. They ONLY offer spots IF the class (MWD class) is not filled.

Good luck and welcome to the most overmanned rate in the Navy!

VaBchMom
01-10-2011, 09:31 AM
I'm still believing that AG is also one of the most overmanned ratings seeing that only 12 AG's advanced to AG2 in the last cycle as an example...

Seth
01-10-2011, 02:56 PM
Only 1 2nd class got advanced for 1st class in the whole navy last cycle....

I think we are at around 140% manning

DK3
01-10-2011, 03:11 PM
Only 1 out of the entire Navy?! Holy cow, that IS tight! When I was in I though Dk's were seriously overmanned, but we always had fairly high number of advancements each testing period. We're not talking hundreds for each pay grade but at least 20-30 for each pay grade. Of course it varied with each period.

Have you given up on crossrating?

Seth
01-10-2011, 05:10 PM
Yeah basically lol, at least for now. everything is CREO 2 or CREO 3. so I cant cross rate to anything I want.

VaBchMom
01-10-2011, 05:12 PM
Looking at the list it had more than 1 advancing...but it definitely doesn't help when a rate is so overmanned and that I definitely agree with you. Remember that Michael was one of 12 Navy-wide to advance last cycle.

Thanks Seth for the quick reply. Glad to hear that it's not impossible for me to somehow get it. I would ask my recruiter to change my contract to active duty but I don't want to sound greedy. I already got real lucky getting my current MA contract and I am really grateful for it. Also, I recently talked with the Senior Chief at the NOSC and he said there are plenty of opportunities for me to do active duty reserves later. I just got to get lucky on what billets are offered when I come back home after A school.

If you don't mind me asking Seth, what made you decide not to work with the MWDs? Was it where they were going to send you afterwards? Thanks again.

Seth
01-10-2011, 08:19 PM
I didnt do MWD because I wanted to learn the actual rate first... I regret not doing it now honestly because I WANT to go to the sand box but cant get an IA to go over there right now.

If MA is so overmanned, I wonder why it was not only offered to me with an enlistment bonus, but also had a ship date only 2 months away.. Lol

DK3
03-13-2011, 11:34 AM
You are reserve. MA may not be overmanned in the reserve componet?

Seth

it has nothing to do with MA work, it wont be similar at all.

Get your memory work done as well as working on ensuring you can do the minimum PT standards however, the minimum shouldn't be the end point just the beginning.
