I am putting this question out now as my son is about half way through his two year active reserve duty. He would like to go active at the end of this time but we are wondering if he will be allowed to re-up into active duty or will he be only given the option of re-upping into active reserves instead of going to his inactive reserve duty. Anyone have the answer out there?

Just bumping this up to see if someone new on here has the answer or knows of someone who was able to re-enlist to active duty.

Hey, glennsmom:
I've been a stranger here.....
My Sailor was denied Re-enlistment in Active Duty. In fact, I haven't heard of any Sailor being given the option. Did your Sailor get it?

My son didn't even try to stay active, just transitioned to his active reserve duty. He may try at try at the end of his two years to go active again but it depends on what he is up to by that time. Definitely not the best contract, especially if you really wanted active duty and not the reserves.

Well to be honest, the NCS program totally screws the sailors, I myself am one, and put in 2 different packages to stay active while i was on active duty. I even had a recommendation from our Admiral and it still got denied.
But once the reserve part of the contract is up there is no reason why someone would not be allowed to reenlist on the active side. I myself have every plans on doing it, since I am taking the E5 exam and should pic it up while still in the reserves so im going to try to go back active as an E5

I was an NCS Sailor who joined in 2005. I was able to stay active. I had to extend for two years to complete my first term of four years active duty, and i'll be re-enlisting this october after for years of active duty in the navy. My request to stay active after my two years of NCS was denied six times, but my command (mostly CO and my ordnance officer) kept re-submitting it. They called the people who review the paperwork constantly and finally, on try number seven, twenty days before the end of my active duty, it was approved. On the NCS contract, if you look closely, one of the options after your initial two year term is to remain on active duty. the only advice i can give is to have your sailor take the contract to his legal department, get some officers and chiefs behind him on it, and keep trying.

Well news on regarding how a NCS sailor can go active again after he transitions to his active reserve duty, have the Navy mobilize them. That is what is happening to my son. He was at his drill week and yesterday he called to tell us he has orders to report for training in August and then will be off to Bahrain. As far as I know he is the only one in his drill unit that was called up and it was not a volunteer IA situation. Just wondering now if that will help his re-enlisting to active duty. From what I can tell he will be active beyond the remainder of his active reserve duty. Anyone who might have some insight into all of this would be appreciated.

Well my son is still doing his active reserve duty but should be done with that. I have no idea if he will be able to go active again or if he has even asked about it.
Anyone out there who has successfully gone from being a reservist to active duty recently? I know it will depend on the needs of the Navy so rate and rank will make a difference but just wondering if anyone has any pointers on what the NCS reservists should do at the end of their active reserve?

My friend that had a 4 year reservist contract and decided to go active 6 months in was told he had to wait 2 years minimum...They let him go active this past June after 26 months of reserve duty I believe.
But it may be two different things. Her son is in the reserves via the NCS program, not just straight up the reserves. Is that the case for your friend or was he NCS also?
